super-food-400x400

If you’re looking to eat right and feel great at the same time, there are some foods that you should consider adding to your menu. While there are plenty of healthy foods out there that you can choose from, the foods listed in this article are some of my favorites. They are all super nutritious and will help you to maintain robust health and a strong physique. These foods will also enhance your body’s health from the inside to the outside!

Chia seeds – A powerhouse of vitamins and nutrients, chia seeds are also a great alternative to the more processed grains you may be faced with choosing. Seeds, by nature of their purpose, are almost always packed with nourishing vitamins and minerals that are essential for life and for your overall wellbeing. Chia seeds are also a fun additive to foods to make them more filling and wholesome. I add chia seeds to literally everything. In the morning I add them to my yogurt, in the afternoon I add them to my protein shake, and at night I add them to my dessert (which is almost always paleo of course). These seeds, which by themselves are generally flavorless, readily absorb whatever substance you put them into thereby taking on that flavor. They also expand when added to liquids, which makes them more filling, and also enables you to make chia seed gels or puddings. This is one superfood you do not want to miss!

Kombucha – An awesome drink that I have recently discovered, and have really fallen in love with it. In fact, I have ended up drinking a kombucha tea on a daily basis because they’re so great. I have seen kombucha described as “an ancient elixir for health”. What kombucha really is however, is a brewed tea that has been fermented by colonies of bacteria and yeast. You might read that sentence a few times and think “Well how is that beneficial for my health?” Trust me, it is! Fermented foods in general are associated with a range of health benefits including the addition of beneficial probiotics to your gut along with helpful digestive enzymes. According to the experts, kombucha has been around for more than 2000 years and in its time has been associated with a number of supposed health benefits from within different cultures. Either way, it tastes great, is advantageous for your health, and it makes a fulfilling bubbly snack!

Berries – I recently read that berries are the healthiest fruit source and having consumed my fair share of berries certainly believe this statement to be true. From strawberries to cranberries, there are many different types of berries available to chose from, all with unique flavors and health benefits. Berries provide their health advantage through high levels of antioxidants, including Vitamin C, and other essential nutrients. Antioxidants help your body to fight disease, to slow down the aging process, and to detox harmful substances from within. Berries are highly available in most supermarkets and make great additions to salads, smoothies, and yogurts. They also taste great on their own as snack. However you get your berries, make sure its a hearty helping of them!

Coconut – Has become a product that is now widely associated with the paleo diet. It is a highly useful fruit in that it can be used as a healthier alternative to many products. Coconut is high in nourishing fats, has a naturally long shelf life, and is stable when used for cooking. Coconut can be incorporated into numerous edibles that are healthier than some of the conventional choices such as coconut cooking oils, coconut milk, coconut yogurt, coconut cream, coconut flakes, coconut butter, etc. The list goes on and on! Coconut is tasty, and with its wide range of uses as a wholesome alternative to traditional (and oftentimes less than beneficial foods) you should be sure to go ahead and incorporate this super food into your routine!

Eggs – Are another powerhouse of vitamins and nutrients and also a great source of protein! For a long time eggs have been associated with high levels of cholesterol and fat, but more recently studies have shown that eggs can actually help to lower levels of bad cholesterol and raise the levels of good cholesterol within your body. Similarly to how seeds are loaded with the nutrition necessary to grow a new plant, eggs are filled with the materials needed to grow a new chicken. This may sound a little strange, but it makes sense in explaining why eggs are such a beneficial super food to your health. They are also another very versatile food in that they can be prepared in many different ways and styles depending on how you prefer. Go ahead and egg up!

Bananas – Bananas are a quick to grab, easy to eat, vitality restoring fruit. Bananas are perfect to chow down on as a snack, to be incorporated into smoothies, or to be sliced up into your yogurt or cereal. Bananas contain heart health potassium which is an essential nutrient that can otherwise be hard to come by. Bananas are also a high carbohydrate food which means they provide your body with fuel and energy. However, bananas are also high in fiber which implies that as they are digested energy is released more slowly. This provides you with stamina for an extended duration while not causing a spike in blood sugar. The fiber in bananas is also beneficial in helping to keep your digestive system functioning regularly. Bananas come prepackaged in their own natural casing, which means there’s no reason why shouldn’t grab one and take it with you wherever you go!

Fish – When I added seafood to this list there were so many great options that came to mind. Salmon, tuna, oysters, shrimp, squid, and the list goes on. Seafood is a great option because most choices are stocked with protein, packed with healthy omega-3 fatty acids, and are relatively low in calories. This food is also super versatile because it can be found cooked, raw, or in cans and is still a healthy choice. Seafood is high in lean proteins but still relatively low in calories which makes it a smart choice for somebody trying to eat lightly. Seafood is usually purchased in a minimally processed form. You can even find many types of fish and shellfish in cans at your local grocery store, without many preservatives, which makes it a helpful option for healthy snacking on the go or when traveling. Not everybody has a taste for seafood, but there are so many different types of fish or shellfish that I’m sure you can find a flavor to your liking.

Kale/SpinachFinally I feel like no superfood list would be complete without listing some leafy greens. I chose to list kale and spinach together because in my opinion, they are similar in how they can be eaten and similar in their benefits to your health. Both kale and spinach are great when snacked on raw. They can both be added to salads, or to any other meal for that matter, to give you a superfood boost. I sometimes even like to include kale or spinach with my eggs in the morning. Both are also great when baked with some sea salt to make homemade chips. Regardless of how you choose to eat these leafy super greens, you can rest assured your body is benefitting. Kale and spinach are both high in iron and can be an especially beneficial source for somebody who is a vegetarian. Both kale and spinach also contain some other harder to come by vitamins and minerals such as vitamin K, copper, manganese, and calcium for example.
