Boulder Sunrise at Red Rocks Trail: A Classic Morning View

Red Rocks at Sunrise- Boulder, Colorado

Before Boulder pours its first cup of coffee, the sandstone walls along Red Rocks Trail begin to glow. At sunrise, the towering red formations above the city shift from deep rust to brilliant gold in a matter of minutes. It’s one of those classic Boulder moments — quiet, dramatic, and completely unforgettable.

Located just west of downtown, Red Rocks Trail is accessed from The Peoples’ Crossing (formerly known as Settlers Park). In 2021, the City of Boulder officially renamed the area as part of an effort to better reflect the broader history of the land. While longtime residents may still say “Settlers Park,” trailhead signage now reads The Peoples’ Crossing.

Either way, the view hasn’t changed — and it’s spectacular.

Why Sunrise Here Hits Different

Red Rocks Trail sits at the base of Boulder’s foothills, offering an elevated perch above the city without requiring a long or strenuous hike. Within minutes, you gain enough elevation to watch the sun rise over the plains to the east while the Flatirons catch early light to the south.

Morning hikers often have the trail mostly to themselves. Climbers quietly prepare near the rock faces. The air feels cooler, calmer, more intentional. It’s Boulder before the buzz.

How to Get There

Trailhead: The Peoples’ Crossing
Address: 1367 Canyon Blvd, Boulder, CO (near the west end of Canyon Boulevard)

From downtown Boulder, head west on Canyon Boulevard toward the mountains. Parking is available near the trailhead lot at The Peoples’ Crossing. Street parking may also be available nearby, but it fills quickly on weekends.

From the trailhead, follow signs for Red Rocks Trail. The main trail climbs steadily for roughly half a mile before connecting with additional loop options. The terrain is dirt and rock, moderately steep in sections but manageable for most hikers.

Dogs are allowed on leash unless under Voice & Sight control regulations (check current OSMP rules).

Arrive early for sunrise — parking can fill up even on weekdays due to the trail’s popularity and easy access.

Fun Facts About Red Rocks Trail

  • The area is a popular beginner-friendly hiking spot because of its proximity to downtown.

A Boulder Classic

In a town known for big summits like Bear Peak and Green Mountain, Red Rocks Trail offers something different — accessibility, perspective, and beauty without needing hours of climbing.
