Boulderite Misses Elks AGAIN: Estes Park WINS The Day

Again I headed to RMNP (Rocky Mountain National Park). I had to make it through the entry gates at Estes Park before 9 AM, lacking a timed entry ticket. Entry before 9 AM meant flashing my Golden Eagle pass and driver’s license and no more. I made it with at least 5-10 minutes to spare. I had taken the scenic route. I drove around the Park a bit, took some pictures, and decided that the elk where nowhere to be seen. Generally, people wisely view elk in the late afternoon. That is because the elk are THERE in the late afternoon. I have seen them earlier in the day, and I was hoping for similar luck. No such luck this morning. By 10:30 AM I was back in Estes Park with a modified plan. I walked around Estes Park for the day chatting with tourists. OK, chatting with other tourists.

Salt Water Taffy In The Making

I had stopped at St. Malo’s church on the scenic route on my way to the park The light on the scene was so perfect that I passed it, and then 1/4 mile down the road I turned around. I was willing to risk missing my limited park entry window to get the St. Malo’s picture. With Long’s Peak in the background and the church glowing in the foreground I took pictures with one camera and with my phone.

This one is a phone picture. After taking a dozen pictures I hoped back in the car, crossed my fingers, and headed towards Estes once again.

After leaving the Park I wandered the tourist-filled streets of Estes Park on the most perfect of days. If the CU Buffs were not playing Nebraska on Saturday 9-7 I might have gone back on Saturday for another walk through town.

Many of the sites in town were very familiar, like the old Park Theater where movies are still being shown.

I had a delightful chat with several people including fellow travelers and several merchants. The glass blower, Dave Clifton, had me mesmerized.

Although the day was hot, this talented glass blower has truly hot working conditions!

The taffy maker was the second-most interesting, although the taffy tasted better than the glass.

Even the flower planters caught my hungry eye. I wonder if, at its heart, taking pictures is really a series of happy accidents. Today’s certainly were just that!
