Fun Facts:
1980: To accommodate a doubling in the number of runners with more than 5,200 entrants, the finish line is moved to the track at Boulder High School.
1981: The finish line is moved to Folsom Field at the suggestion of University of Colorado president Arnold Weber and athletic director Eddie Crowder. Shorter prevails in the race, which has 9,000 participants. The winner among women is Ellen Hart.
1983: To handle rapid expansion, organizers develop the staggered “wave” start, a rolling series of group launches that helps racers maintain their desired pace without interruption and lessens crowding at the front. 16,550 participants enter the race.
1984: To allow citizen runners to hang out in Folsom Field after their race and watch the professionals cross the finish line, organizers hold a separate race for the elite competitors immediately after the citizens race. In total, 17,400 people entered.
