The Power of Visioning!

If I asked you to think about someone you love, an image of that person comes to mind, right?  You don’t think of that person’s name spelled out, you imagine what they look like.  If I asked you to think of a place you would want to go on vacation, you might begin to imagine a beach, or a ski resort, or some image in your mind of what that vacation would look like.  Our minds think in pictures.  Although this is a written article, as you consider these things you are imagining, you see a picture in your head, not the word “beach” or the name of the person you are thinking about.  Pause for a moment and test this.  Whatever word you read here, a picture automatically comes to mind, right?  Apple.  House.  Car.

The reason this is important is because the same process works when we are creating results in our life.  We are constantly thinking; therefore, we are constantly creating.  My question to you is this:  What pictures are you putting in your head that you want to create?  This is where the power of visioning comes in.  Perhaps you have heard of the concept of a “vision board,” maybe you have even created one in your life before.  Visioning absolutely works.  Today I am going to give you some ideas that you can apply immediately to use the power of visioning to create what you want.

I often hear people say they are too busy to do any vision work.  However, you are visioning all the time anyway whether you are aware of it or not, why not make a few tweaks to your thinking and direct your thoughts to get you more of you want?

The good news is that this can be done quickly.  You do not need to spend hours creating a vision board to be able to use these visioning tools. I am not advising against creating a detailed vision board but that can be time consuming. Today, I am going to give you some tools that you can start using immediately to move toward creating more of what you would love to have in your life.

Pick ONE thing you want to see happen this week.  In my coaching business I help my clients vision many different things into their lives, but today let’s just start with one thing.  Once you learn the power of visioning, you can apply this process over and over.  For the sake of this Monday exercise, start with whatever is your biggest goal for this week.  Maybe you are working on closing a sales deal, maybe you have an athletic competition coming up, or maybe you have a big test.  The power of a vision is that it must be very specific.  You also must see yourself in the vision and then imagine the feeling you will have once that vision is realized.

This is how it works:  First picture in your mind the upcoming event.  Imagine all the details around this event.  What are you wearing, who is there, what time of day is it…imagine as many details of the event as you can.  While doing this see yourself in that scene, almost like watching a movie that you are starring in.  Then, imagine the details of how everything happens.  What do you do in this scene?  How do you direct your actions so that it turns out exactly as you would like it to?  Then imagine it completed and allow yourself to feel the joy of accomplishment or victory.   What does it feel like to have just won that game, or closed that deal or aced that test?  That feeling component of visualizing is a critical component.  What is the final picture of what that looks like?  That final picture is what you want to capture as your vision.  This “picture” is what you would put on your vision board.  I like to use it as my screen saver on my phone.  Repeat this vision over and over again so that it gets ingrained into your subconscious.  A vision must be used and repeated in order to be effective.

Here is an example as it relates to my favorite college football team: An image for them this week could include “CU Beats Oregon State!”  One crazy thing about vision photos:  the image does not have to be current and it does not even need to be real!  The subconscious mind does not know the difference.  The important piece here is to program into your mind the end result you want and the feelings associated with the attainment of that result.

This week’s challenge:

  • Identify ONE thing you want to see happen this week.
  • Create an image of that event representing exactly as you want it to be
  • Save that image to your phone screen saver.
