Mother and daughter from Boulder Achieve Top Soul Food Ranking

Soul food has become a popular cuisine in many parts of the United States, and for good reason. This style of cooking is deeply rooted in African American culture and traditions, with many of the dishes featuring ingredients and techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation.

One of the reasons why college students in places like Boulder, Colorado, love to eat soul food is because it provides a sense of comfort and familiarity. Another reason why soul food is so popular is because it is often hearty, flavorful, and affordable. College students are often on a tight budget, and soul food can be a great option for a filling and satisfying meal that won’t break the bank. Dishes like fried chicken, mac and cheese, collard greens, and cornbread are all classic soul food staples that are both delicious and affordable.

Eating soul food can also be an emotional experience for some people. The flavors and aromas of these dishes can bring back memories of family gatherings, holidays, and other special occasions. For college students who may be feeling homesick or nostalgic, soul food can provide a sense of comfort and a reminder of the people and places they love.

According to the most recent yelp reviews, Rae’s and Kay’s in Boulder ranked first for the best Soul Food.

Rae’s & Kay’s is a black-owned family business which has been in the making for over six years. After years of people telling my daughter Isha and I that we need to sell our food we just decided to go for it. Raised in Georgia, I remember being woken up by my Aunt Anabelle at 5:30 every morning to learn how to cook. I have carried her recipes and passion for Soul Food with me for over 40 years.

Isha spent years in the kitchen with Madeline, my granddaughter’s grandmother, by her side, learning to cook Puerto Rican food. Madeline, who was born in Puerto Rico, brought her family recipes to the United States where she shared them with those she loved. With Madeline’s inspiration, Isha and I have taken our passion for cooking and opened up our own business. Rae’s and Kay’s. We are currently working out of a commissary kitchen but dream of having either a food trailer, a food truck, or even our own restaurant.
