Rocky Mountain National Park Pair: Boulder Deer Neighbors

While cars sped past me in Rocky Mountain National Park I pulled over to take pictures. This pair was posing for me.

Boulder’s Close Neighbor, Rocky Mountain National Park, gave me a roadside gift the other day. Not a traffic-free drive, and not a parking spot at Bear Lake—those are rarer than diamonds in July. My gift was two deer.

As cars sped past, drivers locked on their destination and blind to the magic at the shoulder, the deer posed. They weren’t running. They weren’t startled. They were modeling. One lifted its head to the light, ears sharp against the blue sky.

It’s easy to forget that Rocky isn’t just about the peaks or the sweeping vistas. Sometimes the park reveals its beauty in whispers, not shouts. A glance to the side of the road, and there it is—wildness unbothered by traffic, animals who don’t need to prove anything, simply existing with quiet grace.

I snapped a few pictures. The deer didn’t flinch. They looked through me and past me, comfortable in their own world. I couldn’t help but think: the people racing by missed something they’ll never know they missed. The park handed them a masterpiece, and they drove right past without a glance.

That’s the trick with Rocky Mountain National Park, and maybe with life in Boulder County, too. The big views grab attention, but the real treasures? They’re usually standing right at the edge of the road, waiting for you to notice.
