Foxes are extremely intelligent in important ways, such as finding food, surviving in extreme weather, outwitting predators, and protecting their young. Foxes have exceptional hearing. From 40 yards away, they can hear a watch tick.

Red foxes can be found in most habitats in Colorado and Boulder. Riparian zones, open woodlands, pasturelands, and agricultural lands all have them. Red foxes are common on the outskirts of cities and can be prosperous city dwellers.

Red foxes are extremely vocal, particularly during the breeding season. The most common misinterpretation of red fox sounds is screeching yowls, which are frequently reported as a domestic cat fight or a mountain lion screaming. Barking and yipping are also common, especially when there are puppies present. Although foxes howl, the sound is distinct from that of coyotes and wolves.
