The Breathtaking Boulder Blue Jay
This raucous bird is slightly larger than a robin but smaller than a crow. The back is bright blue, white, and black, with a gray or white front. It usually has a crest on its head and a long, pointed, black beak. Many of them have a prominent black “bridle” around their neck.
Blue jays are extremely social and use a wide range of vocalizations, including mimicry. They raise and lower their crest to indicate aggression or peace. They have a reputation for being aggressive, but their supporters point out that other bird species frequently outnumber them. They can carry several acorns in their “gular pouch,” and they cache nuts all over the place, assisting in seed dispersal. When raptors are nearby, their loud cries alert other birds.
