The Boulder Role of Terpenes in Cannabis: How They Contribute to Flavor and Effects

March 17th, 2024

When it comes to cannabis, much attention is often given to cannabinoids like THC and CBD. However, terpenes, the aromatic compounds found in the essential oils of the cannabis plant, play a crucial role in not only giving each strain its unique scent and flavor but also in modulating the overall effects of the plant. Understanding the significance of terpenes can provide a deeper appreciation for the complexity of cannabis and its potential therapeutic benefits. The Entourage Effect One of the key ways terpenes contribute to the overall cannabis experience is through what is known as the entourage... Read More

Let’s Talk About Inflammation!

February 18th, 2024
green and red fruit with green leaves

Inflammation is your body’s natural response to injury, infection, or stress. It helps to heal and protect you from harm. However, when inflammation becomes chronic or excessive, it can cause more harm than good. Chronic inflammation is linked to many health problems, such as: Weight gain and obesity. Cardiovascular disease. Mood and depression. Cognitive function (focus, ADD, and ADHD). Brain health (e.g., Alzheimer’s disease). Sports recovery (more inflammation = longer recovery). Immune compromise. Irritable bowel disease and gut problems. Any disease ending in “itis”... Read More

Why I Do Not Smoke Or Vap, The Magic Butter Machine And A Perfect Cup Of Coffee

February 17th, 2024
coffee, cappuccino, barista

I smoked for decades. Since 1966 back East and then since 1975 in Boulder.  My delivery systems ranged from joints and bongs, to a  coconut water pipe with the farmer of Negil on Xmas Eve some decades ago, and more. Hotels all come with rolling papers if you get stuck. The Gideon’s Bible has several blank pages in each volume, and it works fine. Then I read the list of the 100 plus chemicals that were added to my inhale by the combustion of the flower. While vaping was convenient, I had ongoing concerns. First, the cartridges, in a legal state (assuming that government testing prevents... Read More

From Boulder and I Do Not Smoke Weed

December 30th, 2023

I’m a long time lover of the Devil’s Lettuce, and all of its 105+ cannabinoids. I am however not a fan of the 100+ chemicals which combustion adds to to cannabis. Meaning I do not like smoking. Cannabis yes. Combustion no. I am not a fan of edibles, since they typically have one or both of two cannabinoids; THC and CBD. What about the other 103+ cannabinoids? To fit the market I suspect, most flower seems to have high THC and zero CBD. Selfishly personally I prefer flower with all of the cannabinoids present. For the enhancement of the “unpleasant side effects” I... Read More

Two Sides of the Same Cannabis: Comparing THC and CBD

September 13th, 2023

Though cannabis plays host to at least 85 different cannabinoids, there are two who tend to grab the most time in the spotlight: tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). You’ve probably heard talk—or formed opinions yourself through careful research of your own—about preferences of marijuana users for certain strains that give them that amazing head high or, conversely, those who prefer a nice, mellow body buzz. These differences can be attributed to the makeup of a particular strain and its ratios of THC to CBD. Beyond the effect these two cannabinoids have on recreational experiences,... Read More

Cannabis Is Not Alcohol

July 23rd, 2023

As the budtender, I get in a lot of conversations about why cannabis should be legal. One common argument made is that cannabis should be legal because alcohol is legal. To start with, marijuana should not be legal just because another thing is legal. Marijuana, oops I mean cannabis, should be legal because it is a benefit for humans. We all understand why this argument gets made though, alcohol and cannabis are both substances that get you a little impaired and can affect your judgment. In our society, they are two of our social norms for changing the mindset and relaxing, but they are very different... Read More

Faces of Boulder: Ret Taylor

August 20th, 2021
faces of boulder_ret taylor

On the patio of the Highland City Club in the heart of Boulder, I enjoyed a meal with Ret Taylor. Vines covered the brick surrounding us and a waterfall on the periphery provided background music – components that felt increasingly relevant as our conversation progressed. Ret operates two businesses from the Highlands’ third floor co-working space. He attended CU Boulder but left Boulder for nearly 15 years after graduating in 2001. From humble beginnings, Ret’s early aspirations were cultivated from a perception that success and money were one in the same. He chased dollar signs all over... Read More

Can I Consume Cannabis Before Working Out?

March 28th, 2021

Since cannabis is legal for recreational use in ten states and counting, one of the most common question that comes up is “Can I use cannabis before working out?” The answer is yes. More and more athletes are coming out of the green closet to discuss their cannabis use and how it affects their athletic performance.  Olympian and World Champion Joanna Zeiger, PhD is the founder and coach with Train Away Chronic Pain. She is a cannabis advocate and often discusses how cannabis has helped her manage chronic pain symptoms and provide a restful night’s sleep. Other athletes such as Anna Symonds... Read More
