May 10th, 2022

Pic of the Day – Buffalo in Boulder!

April 30th, 2022

In some ways, the American bison differs from domestic cattle or oxen. It is larger, with a broad, hefty head that is carried low and cannot be raised to shoulder height. The bison also has a prominent hump at the shoulders, massive forequarters, and 14 ribs as opposed to 13 in cattle. The fur is coarse and shaggy, and it is dark brown in color. It grows particularly long on the head, neck, and shoulders, and typically develops a beard on the chin. A white bison is produced on rare occasions; these exceptional individuals were greatly revered – even worshipped – by American Indians. Both sexes... Read More

There are four species of hummingbirds that are commonly seen in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. The most common hummingbirds you’ll encounter are the Broad-tailed (Selasphorus platycercus) and Rufous (Selasphorus rufus). The Calliope (Selasphorus calliope) and Black-chinned (Archilochus alexandri) hummingbirds are less common. photo credit: Tony Harman  Read More

Pic of the Day! – Baby Owls In Boulder

April 25th, 2022

The majority of baby owls are exceptionally fluffy, with a thick coat of white or grey down. They have heart-shaped heads and black button-like circular eyes. The fluff has a hook-shaped beak protruding from it. In addition, baby owls have a prominent egg tooth, a sharp protrusion from their beak that allows them to pierce the egg as it is hatching. Within a week of hatching, these are gone. Some newborn owls have an unusual appearance, particularly Barn owls, which have lengthy faces that contrast with their white fluffy bodies. photo credit: Tony Harman  Read More

Boulder Butterflies!

April 24th, 2022

Colorado is home to about 300 of the world’s 20,000 butterfly species, including the monarch, cabbage white, buckeye, and Western tiger swallowtail. These winged insects aid in flower pollination and provide food for a wide range of animals, including birds and ants. Certain monarch populations move from Mexico to the Eastern United States over three generations in the spring and summer. The fourth generation returns home for the winter, a 3,000-mile round trip. Western monarch butterflies spend the winter in California. photo credit: Tony Harman  Read More

Pic of the Day! – Sledding Fun!

February 17th, 2022

Photo Credit: Tony Harman There’s something intensely satisfying about speeding down a snowy hill on a piece of oversized plastic. You call up your friends, scavenge some sleds from the garage, encase yourself in snow clothes, and embark on your journey towards an incredible sledding hill. Sometimes, however, it’s hard to find the right sledding hill. Much like Goldilocks in The Story of Three Bears, certain sledding hills are too short. Or maybe they’re not steep enough.  Read More
