Today’s Boulder Faces of the day is actually an eye doc tool face of the day, the phoropter!  Possibly made in Switzerland, it performs many eye test functions.  The eye docs have the coolest faces of the day. But what are they? Besides being the best Halloween Mask ever created. Can you tell which is better, “one or two?” I can generall

That machine is usually called a phoropter (sometimes “refractor” or “vision tester”). It’s the big binocular-looking device the eye doc swings in front of your face and clicks through while asking, “Which is better, one or two?” It contains lenses in about 0.25-diopter steps to refine your glasses prescription and can also measure astigmatism and binocular issues.

Two close cousins you may also have met:

  • Autorefractor — the machine you look into first, often with a little house or balloon image. It gives an automated starting estimate of your prescription before the doctor fine-tunes it.

  • Lensometer — measures the power of the glasses lenses you already own, not your eyes.

Lensworth translation:

  • “Which is better, 1 or 2?” = phoropter

  • “Look at the little house” = autorefractor

  • “Let me check your old glasses” = lensometer

The phoropter really is one of the coolest machines in the office — very analog-meets-optics, with all those dials and clicks. If you want, I can also name the other coolest eye-doc machines you likely saw at your cataract/AMD workup. They can cost a mere $15,000 and I want one in the living room!
