Boulder Named One of America’s Most Beautiful College Campuses in New National Study

University of Colorado

New Study Names CU Boulder One of the Most Beautiful Campuses in the U.S.

A new national study has confirmed what Boulder locals, students, alumni, and visitors have known for years: the University of Colorado Boulder is one of the most beautiful college campuses in America.

According to a study from University of Melbourne Online that was shared with Travel + Leisure, CU Boulder ranked No. 3 on the list of the most beautiful college campuses in the United States. The ranking was based on Tripadvisor reviews, with 55.5 percent of reviews describing the Boulder campus as “beautiful.” The study looked at more than 40 major college campuses across the country and measured how often that one word appeared in visitor reviews.

That put CU Boulder behind only Sewanee: The University of the South in Tennessee and Indiana University Bloomington. For Boulder, this is the kind of recognition that feels especially fitting. Few universities in the country can match the combination of natural beauty, architecture, mountain backdrop, and unmistakable local character that defines CU.

What makes the University of Colorado Boulder stand out starts with its setting. The campus sits beneath the iconic Flatirons, with dramatic sandstone formations creating one of the most recognizable backdrops in all of higher education. The views alone are enough to leave an impression on first-time visitors, but the beauty of CU Boulder goes well beyond scenery. The campus blends open green spaces, classic academic buildings, and a sense of connection to the outdoors that feels uniquely Boulder.

The architecture is another big part of what gives CU Boulder its identity. The university’s signature sandstone buildings create a unified look that feels timeless, warm, and welcoming. Instead of looking like a collection of random structures added over the years, the campus has a visual consistency that gives it personality and presence. There is a reason so many students and visitors remember CU not just as a school, but as a place.

That feeling matters. When people choose a college, academics and affordability are major parts of the decision, but the environment matters too. For many students, the campus becomes home for four years or more. It shapes their daily routine, their memories, and the way they feel about the school itself. A beautiful campus can inspire people, calm them, energize them, and create a stronger connection to the experience of being there. In that sense, CU Boulder has a major advantage.

For locals, the ranking comes as no surprise. Boulder has long been known for its balance of education, nature, wellness, and outdoor lifestyle. CU Boulder reflects all of that. It is a campus where students can walk between classes with views of the mountains, spread out on the grass on a sunny afternoon, or head from campus to the trails in a matter of minutes. That kind of setting is rare, and it is one of the reasons Boulder leaves such a lasting impression on so many people.

Visitors often feel it too. Whether they are touring the school, visiting family, attending a game, or simply walking around town, many end up spending time on campus and seeing firsthand why CU is so admired. The atmosphere feels open and alive. It has beauty, but it also has energy. That combination is part of what makes the university so special.

The top 10 list in the study included Sewanee: The University of the South, Indiana University Bloomington, University of Colorado Boulder, Kenyon College, St. Olaf College, Santa Clara University, Rhodes College, William & Mary, Vanderbilt University, and Pepperdine University. That is impressive company, and it says a lot that Boulder earned a place near the very top.

For CU Boulder, this recognition is more than just a flattering headline. It is a reminder of how powerful place can be. The university is not only one of the top schools in the region, but also one of the most visually striking campuses in the country. From its sweeping views and historic feel to its open spaces and unmistakable Boulder spirit, it continues to stand out in ways that go far beyond academics.

In Boulder, beauty has always been part of the identity. This ranking simply gives national recognition to something this community has understood all along.

CU Boulder is not just a great university in a beautiful town. It is one of the most beautiful college campuses in America, and now the rest of the country is being reminded of it.
