Boulder’s Dog of the Day: A Leap of Joy at Coot Lake

Today’s Dog of the Day captures pure, unleashed joy—a mid-air leap frozen in time at one of Boulder’s favorite dog-friendly spots, Coot Lake. With paws tucked, ears flying, and a look of pure bliss, this pup is caught mid-leap, bounding from the grassy shore into the refreshing waters below. It’s not just a jump—it’s a celebration of freedom, fun, and the wild-hearted spirit of Boulder dogs.

Coot Lake, located just north of the Boulder Reservoir at 6247 63rd Street, has become a haven for dogs and their humans. The eastern and southern shores are designated off-leash areas for dogs registered with the City of Boulder’s Voice and Sight Tag Program, making it a hotspot for wet fur, wagging tails, and spontaneous sprints like this one.

But Coot Lake isn’t just about the present—it’s steeped in Boulder history. Formed by accident during construction in the 1960s, the lake filled with groundwater and quickly became a quirky Boulder icon. It was even once a designated nude beach before evolving into the peaceful, family- and dog-friendly spot it is today.

The trail around the lake is an easy 1.2-mile loop—perfect for a casual morning walk or sunset stroll. Amenities include fishing spots, picnic areas, restrooms, and ADA-accessible paths. Parking is available at the main lot, with overflow across the road at Tom Watson Park. And while dogs can roam free in designated areas, the wetlands and western shore are off-limits to preserve local wildlife.

Days like today—when a leap like this happens—remind us why we love Boulder. The dog’s expression is more than just excitement; it’s a reflection of everything Coot Lake represents: nature, joy, and the sweet spot where community and wilderness meet.

So here’s to our Dog of the Day—may your leaps always be high, your landings always splashy, and your spirit always wild.
