Boulder’s Dog of the Day: Addie Soars on the Trails

Captured mid-air with her ears flapping, paws off the ground, and a catch in the air, Addie is the perfect picture of pure canine joy. On a gorgeous day along one of Boulder’s scenic trails, this energetic pup reminded everyone who saw her that there’s no thrill quite like a fetch session in the great outdoors.

Addie’s epic leap highlights what makes Boulder such a paradise for dogs and their humans. With more than 150 miles of trails throughout the area, Boulder offers a variety of hiking, running, and walking paths for every level of adventure—many of which are open to dogs.

Boulder’s trail system is among the most dog-friendly in the country. About 89% of the trails allow dogs on leash, and many of those permit off-leash dogs under Boulder’s Voice and Sight Control program. That means if your dog is well-behaved, under control, and registered in the program, they’re free to roam designated trails without a leash while staying within sight and responding promptly to voice commands.

Favorite off-leash trails for pups like Addie include:

  • Green Mountain West Ridge Trail: A moderately challenging out-and-back trail with breathtaking views and plenty of space for a good romp.

  • Mesa Trail: Stretching over 13 miles, it links several paths for dogs and owners looking to customize their hike and enjoy the varied terrain.

  • Ranger Trail: Located in the Flatirons, this trail offers a beautiful and invigorating ascent perfect for more athletic dogs.

While Boulder encourages dog-friendly exploration, it’s important to be aware of local leash laws and seasonal restrictions. Some areas may require leashes during wildlife nesting seasons or in zones where trail traffic is high. Trailhead signs are always the best guide for whether leashes are required.

Addie’s soaring moment is a celebration of the freedom and fun that Boulder’s natural areas offer to dogs and their families. Her joy reminds us to take a moment, breathe in the mountain air, and embrace the wild-hearted happiness that comes from spending time on the trails.

So whether you’re hitting a steep incline or a gentle meadow path, Boulder has a trail waiting for you—and maybe even a perfect mid-air moment like Addie’s.
