Boulder’s Nederland Carousel of Happiness! Labor of Love on a Leaf Drive.

The idea for Boulder’s Nederland Carousel of Happiness was born in the horrors of the Vietnam War. As Scott Harrison worked to survive, he dreamed of carving. Once safely back from the war, he took the next 26 years restoring and creating parts of a carousel. He found a Wurlitzer, an ancestor of a synthesizer, for a sound system. His main carousel mechanism came from the Great Salt Lake. His animals, to complete the carousel, were 100% carved and painted by Scott.

His bear hangs out comfortably on the back of one of the carousel’s benches. As I photographed the Carousel’s resident sloth, zebra, and friends, Scott was across the street carving another animal. Mr. Harrison has taken Gippeto and Pinochio to another level. He has brought the whole sea and forest to life!

On your leaf-viewing drive, stop at the carousel as you go through Nederland.  In the same parking lot, visit the music store with it’s fine selection of mountain instruments, and the clothing store and its amazing bargains!
