This is an example of cropping. The original picture above has no character. What is it a picture of? The cropped version leaves no doubt that it is a picture of the moon. Shooting the moon or clouds through branches can present very difficult focusing challenges.

So it’s time to get out the manual on the phone or in hard copy and look up “manual focus.” It will save the day.
This crescent moon is a phone picture. I was taking pictures of the sunrise when this lit up crescent moon popped out as perfectly silhouetted against the sky.

While the sky tends to be more clear during the cold weather, (it was cold when I took this picture), astronomy star gazing is way easier during the summer. A flannel shirt might be required. The darker it is outside, the better the sky viewing.
