Bountiful Butterflies Beckon to Boulder: Lepidoptera Await, One Exit Away!

Every trip to the Butterfly Pavilion in neighboring Broomfield rewards us with a unique experience. This most recent visit presented the most butterflies I’ve seen so far in my many visits. It also offered butterflies intent on posing for the camera when they were not sitting on the flash hot shoe on the top of the camera!

Being a bit overwhelmed by the variety I got to photograph, I chose to limit myself to two show-offs.

Heliconius Doris, the Postman Butterfly

I was smiling at the butterflies who hung out on “plain” green leaves in a room full of colorful flowers.

The hardest part of writing this blog was selecting which pics to use! If it had not been greenhouse-hot and humid I could have captured the dazzling delight of dozens more of these beauties.

Parthenos Sylvia, the Blue Clipper Butterfly

Choices? There are approximately 20,000 known species of butterflies worldwide. This number can vary slightly as new species are discovered and classifications are updated. Butterflies belong to the order Lepidoptera, which also includes moths. They are found (so far) on every continent except Antarctica, with the greatest diversity in tropical regions.
