CU Boulder’s Shakespeare Festival Returns with New Venue and Classic Tales

Experience the Magic: Colorado Shakespeare Festival 2025 at CU Boulder

This summer, Boulder once again transforms into a stage for the ages as the Colorado Shakespeare Festival (CSF) returns to the University of Colorado Boulder from June 7 through August 10, 2025. One of the oldest and most respected Shakespeare festivals in the country, CSF offers a rich mix of drama, artistry, and culture, drawing audiences from across Colorado and beyond.

A Season of Power, Betrayal, and Redemption

The 2025 season explores some of Shakespeare’s most enduring themes—power struggles, personal transformation, and redemption. The lineup includes three electrifying productions:

The Tempest (June 7 – August 10)
Directed by Kevin Rich, The Tempest is a magical tale of exile, revenge, and forgiveness. Prospero conjures a storm to bring his enemies to the island he’s made his home, setting the stage for one of Shakespeare’s most captivating stories.

Richard II (July 5 – August 10)
This historical drama delves into the downfall of a king and the fragile nature of political power. Audiences are invited to reflect on leadership, legacy, and the timeless consequences of ambition gone awry.

Doctor Faustus (July 27)
For two nights only, audiences will be treated to Christopher Marlowe’s haunting tale of a man who makes a deal with the devil in pursuit of ultimate knowledge and power. These original practices performances are already sold out, but a waitlist is available.

This year also introduces “double-header Sundays,” where theater lovers can catch two different shows in one day—a full immersion into classical theater.

A New Stage for Timeless Tales

Due to renovations at the iconic Mary Rippon Outdoor Theatre, the 2025 performances will be held indoors at the Roe Green Theatre. This modern venue offers improved seating, climate control, and enhanced accessibility—perfect for enjoying the magic of Shakespeare in comfort and style.

Explore the Shakespeare Gardens

Located near the performance venues, the Shakespeare Gardens are a serene and inspiring place to enjoy before the show. These beautifully curated gardens feature flora referenced in Shakespeare’s plays, offering visitors a peaceful way to connect with the Bard’s world.

Tickets and Accessibility

Tickets for the Colorado Shakespeare Festival range from $22 to $90, with discounts available for students, seniors, CU affiliates, and military members. Preview nights offer additional savings for those looking to enjoy world-class theater on a budget.

The Roe Green Theatre is fully accessible, featuring elevator access, wheelchair seating, and Braille signage to ensure an inclusive experience for all attendees.

Educational Opportunities for Youth

In addition to its performances, CSF continues its legacy of education through engaging summer camps for kids ages 6–18. These camps provide hands-on experience in Shakespearean acting, culminating in fun and inspiring performances by the next generation of theater lovers.

Whether you’re a lifelong Shakespeare fan or curious newcomer, the Colorado Shakespeare Festival is a cultural gem that should not be missed. With its captivating performances, educational outreach, and picturesque Boulder backdrop, CSF 2025 is set to be one of the highlights of the summer.
