Getting Ready For The 4th

Fourth of July Stadium Fireworks

As Summer flies by and June comes to an end, many of us find ourselves desperately searching for something to do on the Fourth of July. Ever since we were children, the fourth is a celebration of patriotism, family, and fun. We associate the fourth with the smell of burning barbecues, the sound of crackling fireworks and the sight of people crowding beaches and parks clad in red, white, and blue. If you’re stuck in town taking classes, yet you’re used to celebrating back home with relatives or old friends, don’t worry! Boulder County was named one of five of “America’s Best Towns for July 4th” by Travel + Leisure Magazine. Here are our suggestions for some Boulder-style holiday fun:

If you’re looking to burn some calories before enjoying beer and BBQ, the Boulder Reservoir hosts the 5k and 10k Craig Towler Freedom Run the morning of July 4. After the run, the reservoir is open until 5pm with regular entree fees, including a beer garden open to people 21+ until 4pm! In the evening, Folsom Field hosts a magnificent fireworks show after sundown, as part of Ralphie’s Independence Day Blast. The doors at Folsom open at 8:00 p.m. and the event includes community performances and a visit from Ralphie herself!

Denver is also just a bus ride away, and offers up a lot of fun, patriotic activities to take part in. On the 3rd, The Civic Center Park hosts Independence Eve Fireworks. The show begins at 8:00 p.m. and includes a free concert along with a patriotic light show projected on the Denver City and County Building. Pack a bag full of picnic materials and enjoy the show before the chaos starts in the morning! Elitch Gardens also hosts a fireworks show the night of the fourth, starting at dusk. You can spend the day enjoying thrill-filled fun on some of Colorado’s tallest roller coasters before enjoying the firework display that evening.

If you’re looking to do something more simple, it is always easy to grab your friends, fill a cooler, and swing into the creek under the sweltering sun. No matter what you choose to do, make sure you stay safe, drink responsibly, and have a fantastic fourth!
