Kali Basman and the Art of Embodied Leadership in Boulder

There are teachers whose work lives at the surface of the body—muscles, poses, adjustments—and then there are teachers like Kali, whose teaching drops you into the marrow of your own existence. Kali teaches at the intersection of yoga, Internal Family Systems therapy, Buddhism, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. What she values most is something rare in the wellness world: self-energy. Not the personality. Not the occupation. Not the roles or the body or the relational identity. Self-energy as the uncontrived, unwavering center inside each person.

When she speaks about self-energy, she describes it as a stable, steady presence that exists beneath every storyline. It is the deep center from which true leadership and guidance flow. It is not performative. It is not curated. It is not dependent on the outer world. It is the true Self leading.

Her second value, embodied wisdom, grows straight out of the first. For Kali, embodied wisdom is devotion. To the body. To breath. To sensation. To the living intelligence running through every tissue and every layer of experience. She practices and teaches with the understanding that this life is temporary and sacred, and that the body is the doorway. Yin practice, slow practice, psychological inquiry, IFS parts work, subtle energetics, Buddhism—all of it brings students back into vivid presence, back into their form, back into the truth that they are here for a short time and can choose to be fully in it.

I know this because I have experienced it. When I practice with Kali, I close my eyes and something inside me opens. Her cues move me into the architecture of my own body—the hip replacement, the five pins in my right shoulder, the history each joint holds. My system drops into a deeper zone than I can reach on my own. My body knows her voice. My mind quiets. My heart softens. My inner world becomes navigable. It is not stretching. It is not exercise. It is guidance into the deepest terrain of myself.

When I asked her what helps her stay true to herself when life becomes hard, she answered with a long, meaningful silence—the kind that matches the depth she carries. Then she spoke of purpose. Of something larger than day-to-day concerns. Of being tethered to a mission that extends far beyond her own storyline. She knows she serves as a touchstone for others. She knows people rely on her to remind them of their spacious nature and their inherent wisdom. That tether is what keeps her aligned.

She believes in Internal Family Systems the way a mountain believes in gravity. She names it as one of the most potent methods for liberating ourselves from conditioned history, childhood wounds, and disruptive patterns. She rejects the idea that healing must take a long time. With self-leadership and real guidance, the shift can happen quickly—but not alone. Community, retreats, inspired teachers, earth-angel mentors matter.

After a decade of teaching retreats and trainings around the world, Kali returns to Boulder with a new steadiness. Motherhood grounds her. A two-year-old brings her home. She now offers one-on-one mentorships and a deeper presence in the community she has always loved.

If you come to her class, you will feel it. She leads from Self. She leads from embodied wisdom. And she opens a portal to your own depth in a way few teachers can.

Kali is here. Boulder is lucky. And anyone who steps into her field may find themselves remembering the deeper layers of who they are.
