Spring Skiing Buff St. Bernard. Avoiding the Rocks!

This is Colorado. This is Boulder. One day it is a sub-arctic or arctic blizzard, and the next day it’s spring skiing.

The St. Bernard has long been associated with rescues on the slopes.

Saint Bernards are a breed of large working dogs from the Swiss Alps, renowned for their historical association with snowy mountain rescues. Originating from the hospice at the Great St Bernard Pass on the Italian-Swiss border, these dogs were bred by monks in the 17th century. They were initially used to guard the hospice but soon became famous for their incredible ability to locate and rescue lost travelers buried under snow.

Their most notable characteristic is their immense size and strength, combined with a gentle, friendly temperament, making them ideal for enduring the harsh alpine conditions. Saint Bernards have a keen sense of direction and smell, which allows them to navigate through blizzards and detect human beings under deep snow. Their thick fur coats provide insulation against the frigid climate, and their broad chests help in clearing paths through the snow.

The image of a Saint Bernard with a brandy barrel around its neck, commonly associated with the breed, stems from tales of these dogs providing warmth and comfort to stranded travelers. Though this portrayal is more myth than reality, it symbolizes the breed’s role in mountain rescue and their compassionate nature.

Saint Bernards have been credited with saving thousands of lives. Perhaps the most famous among them was Barry, who reportedly saved over 40 lives in the early 1800s. His legendary feats have cemented the breed’s heroic status.

While today, modern technology and organized rescue services have largely replaced these dogs in active mountain rescue roles, the Saint Bernard remains a symbol of rescue and safety in alpine regions. Their legacy continues to be celebrated in popular culture and they are cherished as gentle giants, embodying strength, bravery, and kindness in the face of daunting snowy terrains.
