Strange Encounters of the Boulder Kind! Strangers? In Bars? WHO???

Our friend Jane is the definition of “gregarious.” When she enters a room she’ll know everyone in the room within minutes after having them all laughing within seconds. If she’d become a career ambassador there would be world peace!

One delightful Boulder spring evening Jane and her boyfriend of decades were having dinner at the then famous John’s French restaurant on Pearl Street. By the end of the appetizers Dick and Jane were new best friends with the couple at the next table. Jane must have been off that night since it took so long for the bonding to happen!

In the course of the conversation the new friends expressed their amazement at how many people Dick and Jane knew in Boulder.  Jane mentioned that The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde’s nanny and daughter (parented by Chrissie and Ray Davies of the Kinks) stayed at Dick and Jane’s Boulder home. Dick was in the music business. The conversation led the new friends to comment to Jane “You really  know everybody!”

After a delightful (as always) dinner at John’s, Dick and Jane and their new best friends decided to not end the evening but instead planned to meet at a famous mountain restaurant and bar for an after-dinner libation.

In Dick’s Porsche, Dick and Jane arrived at the mountain bar first and got the last 4-top in the bar area. The bar and restaurant were both packed to the rafters with people lining up at the door waiting for anyone to leave. No one was leaving. Not only was every table ordering dessert, their dessert was followed by after-dinner coffee and dessert wine! No one was going anywhere, and if the restaurant served breakfast, they would have had the same full house waiting for morning coffee.

While Dick and Jane were waiting, the Maitre D’ seated Robert Redford directly behind Jane, facing Dick gesturing that this would be just for a moment.  THE Robert Redford, the “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” Robert Redford.   Mr. Redford, whose kid was attending the University of Colorado at the time, sat down. I admit I’m still a bit jealous, that even being used to the famous Jane magnetism, this was above and beyond.

Deeply engrossed in her conversation with Dick, Jane was completely unaware that Mr. Redford was sitting behind her. Dick leaned over to Jane nodding his head  in Mr. Redford’s direction, whispered “You might want to say hello.”

She did, all but falling out of her chair in the process.

After a brief life-memory chat with Mr. Redford, the Maitre D’ reappeared and announced  that his table was ready.  As Redford was being escorted from the bar to the dining room,  the “new friends” arrived at Dick and Jane’s  table. Both of their jaws dropped to the floor seeing Redford say goodbye to Jane. With total incredulity they looked at Jane and exclaimed  “YOU REALLY DO KNOW EVERYBODY!!!”

This is a true tale of Boulder, where the rich and famous sit down with the “regular” folks. And it is also true that Jane really does know everybody. If you have not met her, you probably will and she likely knows you already 🙂
