Tubes of Boulder Color: Saturated Colors, Vermeer and Me

What do I have in common with Vermeer? NOT MUCH! One of the few things we share is a preference for using colors “directly from the tube.” His paintings suggest that he preferred using colors as they were made, applying them to canvas without a great deal of blending. While I am hesitant to call my work “painting,” I do prefer the deep intense colors directly from the tube. Part of that is a color preference. Part of that is the tendency of my palette to turn brown as soon as I try mixing colors.

That would be fine if I were trying to copy Van Gogh’s Potato Eaters. That is not representative of the colors I like to play with, whether on canvas or when I’m playing with glitter. Yes, I have been playing with glitter, making cuff links. As a semi-retired, recovering lawyer, I get to wear cuff links perhaps three times a year instead of almost daily. Currently I make cuff links and then sell them for about my cost. I respectfully suggest that while they are art, they may be bad art or good art. Is that objective or subjective? Is “good” or “bad” a concrete property of the art, or is it indeed in the eyes of the beholder? I believe it is a combination of both, and the subject for another day.

The techniques I’m experimenting with are challenging. I did consult with AI regarding how one works with glitter. AI presented two ideas in particular which have proved useful. Well, one has and the other is promising. First, when I’ve put the glitter on top of the glue, let the glue dry, and shaken the excess glitter off the project, I coat it with clear nail polish. Second, I have not tried pressing the result down to the surface with wax paper. While I might like the sparkles, auto focus does not! I have tried photographing VERY sparkly diamonds, and glitter, with very limited success. That, too, is a subject for another day and another blog!

That has nothing to do with this post beyond observing that the glitter comes in great colors! In addition to cuff links, I am part way done with an attempt at creating an 8″ x 10″ picture of a modified paisley pattern on black canvas. Ask me in a week or so whether or not I like the result, although I suspect that my own opinion is not terribly important.

This is a good example of colors that are not particularly saturated. However, I do like the composition and the color combination. The flowers on the Boulder Mall are magnificent subjects for pictures.
