Ward, Colorado: A Story of Gold, Grit, Narrow Gauge, and Greenery

March 26th, 2024

Ward, Colorado,  is a small, picturesque town with a rich history that traces back to its days as a bustling mining community. Situated at the Western edge of Boulder County just below the Continental Divide,  Ward has a storied past that includes notable figures including (maybe) Patricia Hearst, Patty Hurst and Hazel Schmoll, and historic sites such as the Switzerland Trail, the Columbia Hotel, and the Brainard Lake chain of three lakes leading to the Divide immediately to the West. Boulder’s Mountain Momma

January 2nd, 2024

Boulder has had the honor and privilege of being watched over by the majesty of Longs Peak. Towering 14,259 feet,  4350 meters above sea level, and almost 10,000 feet, 3000 meters above Boulder. We’re mile-high, with the 5280 topo line going through our back yard, right where our Buddha stands. Explaining Boulder County’s Name and Shape

November 18th, 2023

Most of the West was divided up into straight-edged, boxy regions and subdivisions (take a look at poor Yuma County). Boulder County escapes the purely rectangular form of other counties in Colorado, and today we will tell you why. Plus, we will tell you why it’s named Boulder (but we bet you can guess). The need for Colorado to become a territory coincided with the secession of several southern states from the Union in 1861. Colorado applied for statehood that year, and offered the Union secure access to precious mineral deposits. Boulder County was one of the original 17 counties of... Read More
