First Aid for a Boulder First Aid Kit

January 28th, 2024
kermit, first aid, injured

We Boulderites often explore. We explore topics academically and practically. We explore various activities as hobbies and professionally. We use power tools, hand tools, kitchen knives, and a myriad of items with sharp edges, fast moving parts, and other traps for our various body parts. Sometimes we end up with blood, either ours or from the people we are working with. A table-top battle robot is supposed to be a threat to the other battle robots, not to the humans who are competing with their home shop built robots. Whether it is a “smart robot” or a brute force robot, building it... Read More

Forecasting Boulder’s Winter: Lenworth’s Chilling Revelation

January 14th, 2024

Boulderites KNOW that only fools and tourists predict Boulder weather. That used to be true. I believe or at least strongly suspect that the extreme weather we’ve been seeing worldwide is the result in most significant part of climate change. Floods, rains, high temps, low temps, snow amounts, glaciers melting, and on and on. Short term or long term the current trend is beyond question getting more extreme. Our own NCAR and NOAA are at the heart of study of weather and of course more. NO surprise that both are in Boulder. NCAR is an architectural gem in Boulder, and is featured in Woody... Read More

What to do When Boulder’s Sirens Call

June 7th, 2022

As you may have heard, Boulder County’s most recent emergency warning systems test was Monday evening. Boulder’s flood season stretches from April through August, and that means the emergency warning systems need to be tested regularly. Flash floods are no joke, but neither are the 30+ sirens of Boulder County’s outdoor warning system. Following World War II most cities and towns in the United States incorporated siren alarm systems for civil defense. These were originally intended to warn civilians of impending air raids, hence the colloquial term “air raid sirens”.... Read More

My Personal Emergency Evacuation

September 6th, 2018

About a month ago, my hometown caught on fire. I exaggerate you not that Basalt, Colorado is beyond blessed to still be standing (and may all the Lake Christine firefighters have a special place in heaven for their tireless efforts). It’s a rather surreal feeling to hear that some of your dearest friends are evacuating their homes in a place that you spent your entire childhood. It’s nearly impossible to not transplant yourself into such a scenario, and it was in this state of empathy that I had a very cathartic realization about my past attachment, and current detachment, from things. For... Read More

Drones Over Boulder for Safety, not Surveillance

April 12th, 2016

Boulder County commissioners have approved the use of unmanned flying aircraft aka “drones” over Boulder County’s open spaces. What does this mean for you? Boulder County has approved the use of unmanned aircraft systems, or UAS for short, on/above Boulder County property. The craft may take off, fly, and land on city-owned public lands. But not just anyone can fly their own craft over Boulder. Only UAS working on pre-approved agricultural and scientific research projects will be permitted. The hope for the UAS is that they will improve the yield of locally grown crops. Agricultural... Read More
