Boulder Sunrise #12 In Red

May 8th, 2024

Why is there a Boulder flower picture above a sunrise? Because I’m writing this blog, and I can <G> <Grin>. I think that sunrise has a distinct positive mental health impact. It relieves depression I suspect. Speaking of depression, I was counseling a client by phone. His Doc and his peeps wanted him to take anti-depressants and he was very reluctant. I explained to him that regardless of his need for the medication, if he took the anti-depressants, everyone around him would be happier and less depressed! I also promised a flower. Courtesy of a neighbor’s hard work... Read More

Boulder, Spring, and Irises: A Long and Colorful History

May 7th, 2024

I might think I know what I’m going to blog about. Then I look out and see something like this iris. This one is pretty crazy. All other thoughts go to the sidelines, and only this one flower fills my cerebral cortex. No color mixing here! These are colors straight from the tube a la Vermeer. Regardless of the medium, oils, pencil, camera, light is the common critical component. That works philosophically as well. While I might have thought I was going to shed light on one thing, I write about what the light happens to be shining on when I’m at the keyboard or camera. Today, this amazing... Read More

To Blog In Boulder Or Not To Blog! From Shakespeare To Oxford To A Quill Pen

May 7th, 2024

“To blog or Not To Blog.” How many of us can say the next line? I’m thinking most of us. How many? That is the question. Seriously, I cannot get that serious talking about William Shakespeare. Tonight’s Tale, campers, is about a Professor, a Madman, William Shakespeare and the English Language. And Mel Gibson. The Oxford English Dictionary, the OED, had to be written. It did not spring from clean air and righteous living alone. The amazing book, The Professor And The Madman, tells the story about just how the OED was written. Here’s a modernized summary of the great... Read More

A Boulder Baby Bunny: Admiring Tulips!

May 6th, 2024

In Boulder even a baby bunny stops to admire the Spring Flowers! This little guy is about five inches, 13 centimeters, end-to-end. While the flowers are beautiful, the bunny is  almost as cute as it gets. Our own babies are about the only thing cuter! Boulder’s Motivation Monday: Our Spring Palette Unveiled!

May 6th, 2024

‘Tis the season to smell the Boulder flowers! While flower pics may cheer us during short winter days, it is hard to compete with the beauty and fragrance of lilacs in the Spring. Lilacs are in full bloom, and the perfume permeates the Boulder air. Flowering trees astonish us with the sheer mass of their presence and overwhelming beauty. I find myself pulling over and grabbing my camera (phone) and my nose from the shotgun seat. I walk around the trees and bushes without trespassing. The photo ops show why I have 15,000 pictures on my phone alone. Personally I do not reuse “chips”... Read More

Is Fentanyl One Of The Safer Drugs Used In Boulder and Throughout The USA??

May 5th, 2024

Fentanyl, that scourge of society and boon to the underground drug marketers, is safe? What? You think I’m nuts? You think that’s news?? In fact, fentanyl IS one of the safer drugs used in Boulder. Why would I say such an outrageous thing? To be clear, I am NOT talking about street drugs. I am not talking about buying something on the street that is really an “unknown white powder.” Fentanyl may or may not be an identified ingredient in the street drugs. In that form it is incredibly dangerous and people are dying at a truly alarming rate. What AM I talking about?? I’m... Read More

Boulder’s Bear Peak and Green Mt: A Red Sunrise!

May 5th, 2024

Pic Lenny Lensworth Frieling My Boulder-Bizarre sleeping habit are suited to a 4:30 AM blog. It is also suited, currently, for meteor viewing  before dawn as well as being up for sunrises. The view of the sun lighting the Front Range and turning it red is truly heartwarming. Was Polonius right, when in Hamlet, giving advice to his son Laertes on going into the world on going into the world, says “Brevity is the soul of wit.” His soliloquy is the definition of useless advice. so I’ll take it of course. Astonishing, Wikipedia and Shakespeare came to the same conclusion, “a... Read More

Insights for Boulder from Polonius: Trimming the Verbal Fat

May 4th, 2024

pic Lenny Lensworth Frieling Boulder values brevity. After all, “Brevity is the soul of wit.” From the play Hamlet, written by English poet William Shakespeare around 1603. Polonius says it in act 2, scene 2.Some see his “advice to a young man” speech as one good piece of advice after another. A more critical reading IMO in my opinion is that each piece of advice contradicts the advice just given. It is internally contradictory to the point of absurdist humor. BUT in this case, I’m... Read More

Capturing the Boulder Brilliance of Spring Flowers: Nature’s Brushstrokes

May 4th, 2024

Spring is without question “Boulder Beautiful.” Flower colors are what I would call “out of the tube” colors. I’ve hopefully captured some of the special magic of spring colors in these snapshots. This group is from our back yard. Enjoy! Flowers remain fascinating even in their final days of existence. We would do well to emulate that. I love color! My oldest friend refers to “Frieling Colors.” He’s referring to saturated bright colors “right out of the tube.” My sisters and brother share this family trait with me. That the only thing... Read More

Boulder’s Burning Question: Cannabis or Cancer, Which is Safer?

May 3rd, 2024

Organic Chemistry Class: Lab Technique You already know from reading my blogs that I am not great at suspense. If I was, I’d be writing mystery stories and I’d be wealthy. I am neither writing mysteries nor am I wealthy. Yet. I had always wondered if smoking pot was any safer than smoking tobacco. Is one more more carcinogenic than the other? Are there different health risks? How do the ingredients added by combustion compare? Iverson provides a beautiful comparison chart. In short, there are not staggering attention-getting differences! Both contain known carcinogens.... Read More
