A Beautiful Day on the Grass at the Heart of CU Boulder

On a perfect Colorado afternoon, the lawn outside Norlin Library becomes one of the most peaceful and iconic gathering spots on the campus of University of Colorado Boulder. Students spread out blankets, open laptops, toss Frisbees, study for finals, or simply lean back and soak in the sunshine with the Flatirons rising in the distance.

It is one of those scenes that perfectly captures why so many people fall in love with Boulder.

At the center of it all sits Norlin Library, one of the most recognizable buildings on the CU campus. Built in 1940 and named after former university president George Norlin, the library stands as both a symbol of academic excellence and a gathering place for generations of students. Its beautiful sandstone architecture blends perfectly with the rest of the campus, giving CU Boulder a timeless and classic Colorado feel.

But Norlin Library is much more than just books and quiet study rooms.

Inside, students can find everything from rare historical collections to collaborative workspaces, technology labs, and cozy corners perfect for escaping into a good book. During finals week, the library transforms into one of the busiest places in Boulder, filled with students chasing dreams, degrees, and late-night coffee runs.

Outside, however, the atmosphere feels completely different.

The grass surrounding Norlin often becomes an outdoor classroom and social hub rolled into one. On beautiful spring and summer days, students gather under the trees laughing with friends, listening to music, or catching a quick nap between classes. Some are deep in conversation about life after graduation, while others are simply enjoying the kind of weather that has helped make Boulder famous across the country.

What makes this area so unique is the energy.

There is ambition here, but also balance. Students at CU Boulder have long embraced a lifestyle that mixes academics with the outdoors, wellness, creativity, and adventure. One minute someone might be studying engineering on the lawn, and the next they are heading out for a hike at Chautauqua or a sunset walk along Boulder Creek.

That spirit is part of what makes Boulder different.

On days like this, with students relaxing on the grass outside Norlin Library beneath Colorado’s endless blue skies, it becomes easy to understand why the University of Colorado continues to attract students from all over the world.

Some campuses simply educate people.

Boulder inspires them.
