The term “420” first appeared in the 1970s. A group of five high school teenagers in California used to meet every week at 4:20 p.m. to look for a cannabis plant that was allegedly left behind in a forest by a U.S. Coast Guard member who could no longer tend to the crop. They met at 4:20 p.m. because they were all athletes with sports practices prior to that time. The group was dubbed “the Waldos” because they used to hang out by a wall outside their San Rafael high school.
