Keeping Your Gas Bills DOWN!

Absolutely YES!!!

Getting The Best Mileage: Small Habits, Big Savings

If there is one thing most drivers in Boulder can agree on, it is this: gasoline never seems cheap enough. We also agree that gas is expensive and showing no signs of coming down anytime soon. The good news is that getting better mileage is usually not about buying a new car. It is about changing a few habits.

The first and biggest trick is to drive like there is an egg between your foot and the gas pedal. Fast starts, jackrabbit acceleration, and sudden frequent braking waste fuel. Smooth acceleration and looking ahead so you can ease into stops will almost always improve mileage.

Tire pressure matters more than many people realize. Underinflated tires create rolling resistance, which is just a fancy way of saying your car has to work harder to move. Keeping the tires properly inflated is one of the cheapest ways to save money.

Speed matters too. Most cars do best at moderate highway speeds. Once you push much past that sweet spot, mileage starts dropping. Driving a little slower may not feel dramatic, but over time it adds up.

Does tailgating impact mileage? ABSOLUTELY!  Every time you need to slow for the car in front of you,  you’ll burn extra gas getting back up to speed as you catch up to them. Simply leaving a greater following distance will increase your mileage significantly.

Extra weight is another thief hiding in plain sight. If your trunk is carrying around things you do not need, your engine is hauling them everywhere you go. Clean it out.

And of course, maintenance matters. A clean air filter, proper oil, and an engine running well all help.

In the end, the secret is simple: smooth, steady, light, and maintained. That is how you stretch a gallon and keep more dollars in your pocket.
