Boulder’s Cool-Down Food Tour for the Summer Heat

Pearl Street Mall – Boulder, CO (Elevation: 5,430 ft) One of the most beautiful and top-rated outdoor malls in the U.S., with the Flatirons of the Rocky Mountains as a stunning backdrop

Boulder is emerging from one of its hottest Julys on record, complete with prolonged stretches in the 90s and several triple-digit days. Then came a dramatic change: the temperature dropped to 46 degrees on August 5, establishing a new daily record low.

That refreshing break did not last long. Temperatures are climbing back into the 90s, and wildfire smoke, fine particulates, and elevated ozone remain concerns along portions of the Front Range. It is the kind of weather that calls for lighter meals, frozen desserts, cold drinks, and carefully planned time outdoors.

Fortunately, Boulder knows how to make hot weather taste better.

A proper Boulder cool-down food tour combines ice cream, gelato, cold-pressed juice, fruit-packed smoothies, crisp salads, colorful poké bowls, and a refreshing non-alcoholic drink. Add a visit to the Boulder County Fair, and it becomes one of the most satisfying food adventures of late summer.

Start With Boulder Ice Cream and Gelato

Nothing resets a hot afternoon quite like a cold scoop.

Sweet Cow remains one of Boulder’s most popular neighborhood ice cream shops, with locations in North and South Boulder. Its small-batch selection regularly includes favorites such as Dutch chocolate, chocolate chip cookie dough, fruit sorbets, and rotating vegan flavors. Ice cream sandwiches, milkshakes, floats, and sundaes provide even more ways to cool down.

Glacier Homemade Ice Cream & Gelato is another longtime Boulder favorite, known for its creamy texture and extensive rotation of flavors. The lineup changes frequently, so visitors can usually find something unexpected alongside familiar chocolate, coffee, fruit, and nut combinations.

Downtown, Gelato Boy operates two Pearl Street locations, making it one of the easiest frozen-dessert stops to include in a walking tour. Its Italian-style gelato feels slightly lighter than traditional ice cream, while fruit sorbets and vegan selections provide additional options.

Heaven Creamery and Van Leeuwen Ice Cream expand Boulder’s frozen-dessert scene with inventive flavors and dairy-free choices. That makes the city especially accommodating when a group includes traditional ice cream lovers, vegans, and people searching for something fruit-forward and refreshing.

Reset With a Smoothie or Cold-Pressed Juice

For something cold without starting the day with dessert, Boulder offers an impressive collection of juice, smoothie, and açaí bowl shops.

Wonder Press, located at 946 Pearl Street, specializes in cold-pressed juices, smoothies, coffee, wellness drinks, and seasonal offerings. Its downtown location makes it a natural starting point for a Pearl Street food tour.

Vitality Bowls, at 2525 Arapahoe Avenue, serves açaí bowls, smoothies, salads, wraps, and grain bowls. It is particularly convenient after a morning walk, bike ride, or hike before the afternoon heat reaches its peak.

Rush Bowls has locations on The Hill and in North Boulder, with smoothies and bowls built around blended fruit and a selection of toppings. These bowls can be substantial enough to serve as breakfast or lunch rather than simply a snack.

Smoothies and juices can be refreshing, but they should not replace water during extreme heat. Carry water throughout the day, especially when walking between restaurants or spending time outside.

Find Fresh Salads and Cold Bowls

When the temperature climbs, a cold bowl can be far more appealing than a heavy lunch.

Sweetgreen, located at 16th and Pearl, allows diners to customize salads and bowls with greens, vegetables, grains, plant-based ingredients, and different proteins. Its flexible menu makes it a convenient option for groups with different tastes and dietary preferences.

On the west side of downtown, Pearl Poké serves customizable bowls with choices such as fish or tofu, rice, greens, seaweed, vegetables, sauces, and crunchy toppings. The chilled ingredients and contrasting textures make poké especially satisfying during a hot Boulder afternoon.

Near 14th and Pearl, Avanti Food & Beverage brings several restaurant concepts together in one food hall. Its variety is helpful when nobody can agree on one type of food, while its rooftop offers sweeping views toward the Flatirons. During the hottest part of the day, the air-conditioned indoor areas may be more comfortable than the exposed rooftop.

Explore Boulder’s Non-Alcoholic Side

Boulder’s non-alcoholic drink scene has grown far beyond soda and sparkling water.

Local favorite Upslope Brewing Company produces Non-Alcoholic Craft Light, a clean, light-bodied American-style lager containing less than 0.5% alcohol. It is available in six-packs, and Upslope’s Flatiron Park taproom offers it on draft.

Athletic Brewing and other craft non-alcoholic brands are also widely available around Boulder. Meanwhile, more local restaurants and bars are offering mocktails and other thoughtfully prepared zero-proof drinks.

A cold non-alcoholic beer or mocktail preserves the relaxed patio experience without the dehydrating effects or afternoon sluggishness that alcohol can bring during extremely hot weather.

Add the Boulder County Fair

For a completely different food experience, head to the Boulder County Fair at 9595 Nelson Road in Longmont.

The 2026 fair runs through Sunday, August 9, with free gate admission and free parking. Visitors can enjoy carnival rides, livestock exhibits, live music, food vendors, and classic fairground entertainment.

This is the place to embrace summer nostalgia. Funnel cakes, corn dogs, fried creations, cold lemonade, and other carnival favorites provide a fun contrast to Boulder’s smoothies, salads, and carefully constructed bowls.

Enjoy an unapologetically messy fair treat in Longmont, then return to Boulder for gelato, a fruit smoothie, or a refreshing zero-proof drink.

Boulder’s outdoor lifestyle does not stop when the temperature climbs. It simply shifts toward earlier walks, shady patios, air-conditioned restaurants, cold drinks, and frozen desserts.

Check current air quality before beginning an extended outdoor route, carry plenty of water, and save strenuous activity for the cooler morning or evening hours. Most of the central Pearl Street stops are close enough to combine into a relaxed walking tour, with air-conditioned businesses available along the way.
