Boulder’s Golden Ash Carpet

The Visit of Boulder’s Golden Ash Carpet Continues!

No, I am  not yet tired of the golden glow of the ash tree as it greets the fall. While the red of maples and the gold of aspens is always an amazing treat, there is something about the golden ash leaves that fascinates me.

Boulder’s Golden Ash Carpet Makes Its Yearly Appearance

The ash tree’s transformation in the fall is one of nature’s subtle yet striking displays. As temperatures drop and days grow shorter, the green leaves of the ash begin their seasonal shift to vibrant shades of yellow-gold. This change occurs due to the breakdown of chlorophyll, the pigment responsible for the tree’s lush green during spring and summer. As the chlorophyll fades, it reveals the carotenoids, which are always present in the leaves but masked by the green.

Ash trees, particularly the white and green varieties, are known for their brilliant yellow fall color. The gold tones can be especially stunning when illuminated by the autumn sun, creating a soft, golden glow that adds warmth to the crisp air of the season. These trees, often found lining streets or in parks, contribute to the mosaic of autumn hues that define the landscape during this time of year.

The ash tree’s autumn display is short-lived, with the leaves dropping soon after they change. However, the fleeting beauty of the yellow-gold leaves makes this transformation all the more special—a reminder of the cyclical nature of seasons and the quiet splendor of trees preparing for winter. Whether standing alone or as part of a forest canopy, the ash tree’s autumn gold is a sight worth pausing to admire.
