Izzy: The Dog of the Day Who Proves Great Training Lasts a Lifetime

Today’s Dog of the Day is Izzy, a beautiful 15-year-old Border Collie/Australian Shepherd mix with a story that carries a lesson for every dog owner. Izzy was raised by her master, John, with both verbal commands and matching hand signals. Back then, it was simply smart training. Today, it is something even more important. It is a blessing.

As dogs grow older, hearing loss is not unusual. It happens gradually, and for many loving pet owners it can be a sad and frustrating part of aging. But Izzy had a head start. Because John taught her hand signals for commands like “sit,” “stay,” and the rest right from the beginning, she still understands what is being asked of her even as her hearing fades. That is not just a neat trick. It can truly be a life saver.

Good dog training is never just about obedience. It is about communication, safety, and building a bond that lasts through every stage of life. Izzy’s story is a reminder that when we take a little extra time early on, our dogs can carry that gift with them for years and years.
