Faces of Boulder: Climbing the Second Flatiron

Second Flatiron, Boulder, CO

In this incredible photo, a climber makes her way up the Second Flatiron, one of Boulder’s most iconic and recognizable rock formations. The view alone is breathtaking. From this vantage point, you can see the First Flatiron rising behind her, while the city of Boulder stretches out far below across the Front Range.

Moments like this define what makes Boulder special.

Climbing has always been part of the fabric of this town. Long before Boulder became known worldwide for its outdoor lifestyle, climbers were already testing themselves on the towering sandstone slabs of the Flatirons. Today, these formations remain some of the most photographed and celebrated climbing routes in Colorado.

The Second Flatiron is particularly famous among climbers. Rising roughly 700 feet above Chautauqua Park, its sweeping slab routes offer an unforgettable experience for those who venture onto its face. Unlike steep vertical walls, much of the climbing here follows a more angled surface, allowing climbers to move gracefully across the rock while taking in the spectacular scenery around them.

From above, Boulder looks peaceful and expansive. You can spot the green lawns of Chautauqua Park, the rooftops of the University of Colorado campus, and the neighborhoods that make up this vibrant mountain town. The First Flatiron, standing proudly nearby, adds another dramatic layer to the landscape, reminding us just how unique Boulder’s geology truly is.

But what makes this photo so powerful isn’t just the location. It’s the person.

Climbers embody a special kind of spirit — determination, focus, and a deep connection with the natural world. Each step upward requires balance, patience, and trust in both the rock and oneself. Watching someone scale the Flatirons is a reminder that adventure is always within reach here.

That’s what Faces of Boulder is all about — capturing real moments of people living fully in this incredible place.

Some cities are known for their buildings. Boulder is known for its mountains. And on any given day, if you look up toward the Flatirons, you might spot someone making their way skyward, chasing that same sense of freedom and perspective.

This climber, perched high on the Second Flatiron with Boulder spread out below, represents the adventurous heart of the community.

In Boulder, the mountains aren’t just scenery.

They’re a way of life.
