Faces of Boulder: Mountain Running Edition

Running High: Boulder’s Mountain Trails and the Runners Who Love Them

Today’s Faces of Boulder celebrates one of the most iconic figures you’ll find on our trails: the mountain runner. Lean, sun-kissed, and laced up tight, this runner is seen scaling steep switchbacks, floating over rocky ridgelines, and embracing every bit of elevation Boulder has to offer.

It’s no secret that Boulder, Colorado is a global Mecca for runners, especially those who prefer their workouts with altitude and attitude. With more than 150 miles of trails accessible from town, runners have endless options—from technical ascents to flowy foothill paths, all set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Flatirons.

Boulder’s most popular mountain running trails include:

  • Mount Sanitas: Short, steep, and a local rite of passage.

  • Bear Peak via Fern Canyon: Brutal climb, unbeatable views.

  • Green Mountain: A favorite for elite athletes training for vertical gain.

  • Mesa Trail: Ideal for long-distance runners connecting multiple peaks.

  • Chautauqua Trail System: The gateway to countless mountain adventures.

Why do runners come here from all over the world? It’s the perfect combination of altitude (5,400 feet), terrain, and community. The trails are well-maintained, accessible year-round, and varied enough to suit everyone from first-timers to Olympians.

And it’s not just about the trails—it’s about the training culture. Boulder is home to world-class endurance athletes, many of whom train here specifically for events like the BOLDERBoulder 10K, one of the most famous road races in the world. The mountain trails offer a natural cross-training playground that builds strength, stamina, and grit.

For our featured runner, today wasn’t about a race. It was about joy. About finding rhythm in the rocks, peace in the pine trees, and that runner’s high you only get above 7,000 feet.

So lace up, Boulder. Your mountains are calling—and they’re perfect for a run.
