Fall Gold Ash Tree Shows Off!!! Golden Fall Splendor Is Short Lived.

Fall gold ash tree

Boulder’s Fall Gold Ash Tree

Nature must have an affinity for the gold-blue combination of everything from the University of Colorado Buffs to Aspens and Ashes and the Colorado Sky. Boulder’s Fall Gold Ash Tree parades the color combination in all its glory!

In the fall, ash leaves change color as part of a natural process triggered by changes in sunlight and temperature. As days grow shorter and temperatures drop, trees like the ash stop producing chlorophyll, the pigment responsible for their green color. Without chlorophyll, other pigments in the leaves become visible.

In ash trees, this often reveals yellow and purple hues, thanks to carotenoids and anthocyanins present in the leaves. Carotenoids, responsible for yellows and oranges, are always in the leaves but masked by chlorophyll during the growing season. Anthocyanins, which create purples and reds, may be produced in cooler fall temperatures.

This change not only provides a brilliant display of autumn colors but also helps the tree conserve energy. By shedding leaves, the tree reduces water loss and enters dormancy to survive the colder months, preparing for the next growing season.
