Outdoor Picture of the Day: Green Mountain and Colorado’s Continental Divide

View from the summit of Green Mountain overlooking Colorado’s Continental Divide on a crystal-clear summer day.

Today’s Outdoor Picture of the Day captures one of Boulder’s most rewarding summit views: Green Mountain with the majestic Continental Divide stretching across the western horizon. From this rocky summit, the rugged peaks of the Indian Peaks Wilderness rise beyond Boulder’s foothills, creating one of the Front Range’s most unforgettable panoramas. It’s the kind of view that makes every step of the climb worthwhile.

At 8,144 feet, Green Mountain is one of Boulder’s signature skyline peaks and a favorite destination for hikers seeking a true summit experience close to town. Located within the City of Boulder’s Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP)system, the mountain offers spectacular scenery in every direction. To the east, Boulder, the plains, and the iconic Flatirons spread out below. To the west, the Continental Divide dominates the skyline with snow-capped peaks that often remain white well into summer.

How to Get to Green Mountain

Several excellent routes lead to the summit, depending on the type of hike you’re looking for.

West Ridge Trail (Easiest Option)
Drive up Flagstaff Road past the “Leaving City of Boulder” sign to the Green Mountain West Trailhead. This route is approximately 3–4 miles round-trip with 600–900 feet of elevation gain, making it one of the easiest ways to reach the summit while enjoying spectacular views.

Gregory Canyon Trail (Classic Challenge)
Begin at the Gregory Canyon Trailhead near Chautauqua. Follow Gregory Canyon Trail to Ranger Trail and continue to the summit. This route is approximately 5.5–6 miles round-trip with about 2,000–2,400 feet of elevation gain, offering a more strenuous climb and outstanding scenery.

Other Popular Routes
Hikers can also reach Green Mountain via Saddle Rock, E.M. Greenman Trail, and connecting trails through Chautauqua, each offering its own combination of forests, rock formations, and panoramic overlooks.

Before You Go

Many OSMP trailheads require paid parking for non-Boulder County registered vehicles, and parking areas often fill early on weekends. Arriving early or hiking on weekdays provides the best experience.

Bring plenty of water, wear sturdy hiking shoes, and start early during the summer months to avoid afternoon thunderstorms. If you’re hiking with your dog, be sure to check current OSMP Voice and Sight and leash regulations before heading out.

Whether you’re looking for a challenging workout, a peaceful escape above the city, or one of Boulder’s most spectacular mountain panoramas, Green Mountain delivers. From its rocky summit, the Continental Divide stretches across the horizon in a view that reminds you why Boulder remains one of Colorado’s premier outdoor destinations.
