Ralphie the Buffalo: The Beating Heart of the University of Colorado

The Thunder Before the Game

Few traditions in college sports rival the sight of Ralphie, the live buffalo mascot of the University of Colorado. When she explodes onto the turf at Folsom Field, escorted by five student handlers, the stadium roars with anticipation. Ralphie isn’t just a mascot—she’s a living legend, embodying the spirit, strength, and wild heart of the Buffs.

A Tradition Born in the 1960s

While the nickname “Buffaloes” dates back to 1934, the live mascot tradition began in 1966 with Ralphie I. Donated by the family of a CU freshman, Ralphie quickly became a sensation. Her first official field run took place on September 16, 1967, against Baylor. Since then, every generation of Ralphie has carried forward the same pre-game ritual: a high-speed horseshoe run across the field, electrifying fans and symbolizing the unstoppable force of Colorado.

All Ralphies have been female, chosen because they are smaller and more manageable than full-grown bulls. But make no mistake—each weighs hundreds of pounds, and their power on the field is awe-inspiring.

Handlers Who Keep the Tradition Alive

Behind Ralphie’s thunderous runs is a team of dedicated student handlers. These athletes train extensively in strength, speed, and teamwork to guide Ralphie safely. Off the field, they provide daily care—feeding, grooming, and maintaining her private ranch home outside of Boulder. Their bond with Ralphie goes beyond game days; it’s a year-round commitment to her health and happiness.

From Ralphie I to Ralphie VII

Over the decades, Ralphie has become more than a game-day icon. Ralphie I led the way from 1966 to 1978, followed by a lineage of successors that fans remember fondly. Most recently, Ralphie VI—nicknamed “Ember”—took the field in 2021. By 2025, however, CU announced her retirement, citing her lack of interest in running.

That’s where Ralphie VII enters the story. Born at Eagle’s Wing Ranch near Steamboat Springs, the young bison made her debut on September 20, 2025. At about a year old and weighing nearly 700 pounds, she represents the future of the tradition. Her handlers say she’s eager, spirited, and far from indifferent to the run.

Why Ralphie Matters

For fans, alumni, and students, Ralphie is more than a spectacle—she’s a unifying symbol. Her run ties together generations of Buffs, blending athletic pride with Colorado’s Western heritage. She also sparks bigger conversations about animal stewardship, tradition, and respect for wildlife.

As Ralphie VII begins her chapter, Buff Nation celebrates both the past and the promise of the future. Whether it’s a packed Saturday at Folsom Field or a quiet day at her ranch, Ralphie embodies the strength and resilience that defines Colorado.

Final Thoughts

When the announcer shouts “Here comes Ralphie!” the crowd knows what’s coming: thunder, tradition, and pride. Ralphie is not just the face of the Buffaloes—she’s the heartbeat of the University of Colorado, charging into history with every run.
