Many widely admired and loved people are openly gay. Here are seven of the perhaps most famous of the openly gay superstars.

Ellen DeGeneres is an American comedian, television host, actress, writer, and producer. She is best known for her daytime television talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which ran from 2003 to 2022. Ellen came out as a lesbian in 1997 during an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show and simultaneously through her character on the sitcom Ellen. Her announcement was groundbreaking and paved the way for greater acceptance and visibility of LGBTQ+ individuals in the media.

Elton John is a British singer, songwriter, pianist, and composer who has achieved international fame for his work in the music industry. He came out as bisexual in a 1976 interview with Rolling Stone and later confirmed he was gay in a 1992 interview with the same magazine. Elton John has been a prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and has used his platform to support various charitable causes, including the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

Neil Patrick Harris is an American actor, singer, writer, producer, and television host. He is best known for his roles in Doogie Howser, M.D. and How I Met Your Mother. Harris publicly came out as gay in 2006 in response to media speculation about his sexuality. He has since been an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and representation. Harris is married to David Burtka, and the couple has two children.

Jodie Foster is an American actress, director, and producer known for her critically acclaimed performances in films such as The Silence of the Lambs and Taxi Driver. Foster publicly acknowledged her sexuality in a heartfelt speech at the 2013 Golden Globe Awards, where she received the Cecil B. DeMille Award. In December 2020, Page came out as transgender and announced his name as Elliot, becoming a prominent advocate for both LGBTQ+ and transgender rights.

Rosie O’Donnell is an American comedian, actress, author, and television personality known for her work on The Rosie O’Donnell Show and as a co-host on The View. She came out as a lesbian in 2002 during a stand-up performance, later confirming her sexuality in interviews. O’Donnell has been a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, particularly in areas concerning adoption and family issues, and has used her platform to support various social causes.
