Boulder Falls, situated 11 miles west of Boulder, lies on the north side of Boulder Canyon Drive (SR 119), nestled between Boulder and Nederland, Colorado. This picturesque locale spans five acres and has a rich history rooted in the region’s mining heritage. The land, originally designated for mining claims, was generously donated to the City of Boulder in 1914 by Charles G. Buckingham. Buckingham was not only the president but also a co-founder of Buckingham Brothers Bank, which is known today as Norwest Bank.

He held a U.S. Patent since 1881 on the American Mill site, which encompassed the area around the falls. His decision to donate the land was driven by a desire to protect this stunning natural site from the rampant development spurred by the great tungsten boom of the early 20th century. By donating the land, Buckingham ensured that Boulder Falls would remain a recreational haven for future generations, preserving its natural beauty against the encroachments of industrial exploitation.
