Colorado’s Highest Marijuana Consumers: A County Breakdown, The Mouse That Roared!

In Colorado, including Boulder, several cities and counties stand out for their high per capita use of both recreational and medical marijuana.

For recreational marijuana, the highest per capita sales have been reported in southern border communities like Las Animas County, which includes the city of Trinidad. This area has seen a significant influx of marijuana sales, partly driven by visitors from neighboring states like New Mexico and Texas. In 2017, Las Animas County led the state with over $3,100 in recreational cannabis sold per capita. That’s about an ounce a month average per person. That translates to about a joint a day average per person in Las Animas County, Colorado.

Other areas with high per capita sales include Costilla County and Montezuma County. The mountain communities of Ouray and Summit counties also rank high for recreational marijuana sales per capita, despite their smaller populations. Summit County is a significant tourist destination, year ’round.

For medical marijuana, detailed per capita data is less readily available, but populous cities such as Denver and Boulder are known for their significant medical marijuana markets. These cities host numerous dispensaries and have large communities of registered medical marijuana patients.

Cities with the Highest Per Capita Pot Consumption. Border Proximity Is a Factor.

Overall, while Denver and Boulder lead in overall sales due to their larger populations, smaller rural counties along Colorado’s southern border, like Las Animas, see the highest per capita sales for recreational marijuana.
