Humans have always had a complicated relationship with weather. Ancient cultures prayed and made offerings to gods in hopes of receiving conditions conducive to growing crops. Adverse weather, then, was often interpreted as displeasure on behalf of those same beings—a punishment for failing to observe proper rituals. It doesn’t take a history scholar to understand this impulse. Weather, now as then, is both an enemy and ally. On one hand, it provides everything from the raw material for food—sunlight driving photosynthesis, wind the primary method of plants spreading their seeds—to …

Sometimes, writing about art and theater feels a lot like falling down the proverbial rabbit hole as I try to find the angle to write about wandering through a haunted-theater immersive experience, getting splashed in a Halloween horror show in the basement of a spaghetti emporium, sweating through a DIY D&D in a comic shop, savoring (har har!) Sweeney Todd’s enraged high notes, and trying to quiet my howling dog in a public house. I’ve found myself in some odd and awkward scenarios. To update the metaphor, writing this column is a lot like drunk-clicking through an endless algorithm o…

Winter is here! What better way to celebrate the arrival of snow then going our for a day in the flatirons? Meet Coda! This fulltime student enjoys hiking, camping, and exploring the backcountry of Colorado. His favorite hobby is snowboarding and spending time out in nature. He spent the first couple of weeks this summer hiking the Colorado Trail, beginning just outside of Denver. By beginning in mid May, he quickly ran into snow in the lost creek wilderness and had to cut his hike short. However, he is looking forward to getting back out and finishing the thru-hike in the near future. Thanks Coda!

Before winter crept into the foothills, Matthew spent the afternoon hiking in the flatirons. Only days before snow blanketed the forest, he made sure to squeeze in one final late fall hike. The snow doesn't bother him however, because he is an avid backcountry skier. As the snow accumulates in Rocky Mountain National Park, he will soon be heading out to catch some fresh powder. Nice to meet you matt!

Snow-snow-snow! The best way to dive into winter is getting out and exploring the snowy backcountry of Colorado. Jay spent his Saturday afternoon taking a break from classes, and climbing high in Rocky Mountain National Park. With lots of snow in the forecast, it's safe to say that winter is here, and the much welcomed snow has opened up a different way to explore this beautiful state.   Thanks Jay!

Winter is here! With the first big snow bringing in the accumulation, Boulder residents are finding their way outside for fun winter activities. This young man threw on his layers and found some time to hike around in backcountry. His favorite part about being in nature in winter time? "The silence, and peaceful quite that snow brings into nature. Everything is so quite, and things are so still. I find peace in that".   Thanks friend, enjoy your peaceful experience in nature!

A day exploring is never a day wasted! It's even better when you find yourself off trail. This fulltime student took a break from studying to get out and enjoy the beautiful countryside Colorado has to offer. After hiking a trail in the Flatirons, he decided to go off route and scramble up a fallen tree. It is always nice to get away from it all, find a nice place to relax off the beaten path, and soak up every ounce of nature.
