What Classifies a Craft Brew?

October 27th, 2017

“What makes a craft brew, a craft brew?” I innocently asked. The man looked at me, as if I were still in high school, barely old enough to drink a soda, let alone a beer. He replied, with a perplexed look on his face, “As long as you produce less beer than Sam Adams, you’re considered a craft brewery.” I thought to myself, “Seriously?” Now, I don’t recall where I was (it was one of those nights), but I was speaking to a Boulder beer aficionado, or so I thought. Saying Goodbye to Walnut Brewery

May 12th, 2017

A well-loved brewpub in downtown Boulder, Walnut Brewery, announced Thursday that they will be closing their doors on June 4th after 27 years of business. Where Boulder Beer Co. gets to claim its place as Boulder’s first brewery, Walnut Brewery was Boulder’s first brewpub; a contribution that I, for one, greatly appreciate. Beautiful sunny days are interrupted by harrowing snowstorms, only to be followed by more sun. Yes, I realize this is par for the course in Colorado, but after the fifth alternation between Colorado’s hot and cold seasons in just this week alone, I’m ready for permanently warmer weather, Punxsutawney Phil be damned.... Read More

Stout Month at The Mountain Sun, or, an Afternoon in Boulder’s Most ‘Boulder’ Brewpub

Mountain Sun Boulder

I realize, writing an editorial about The Mountain Sun to Boulderites is much like a movie critic extolling the cinematic genius of Dr. Zhivago. I also realize that writing a piece on The Mountain Sun’s Stout Month to Boulderites is much like a music critic venturing to the Monterey Pop Festival, and saying the music was “pretty great.” Let’s face it: The Mountain Sun is a Boulder institution. Their yearly homage to dark and malty beer, Stout Month, has become a tradition for the denizens of Boulder since the celebration began 22 years ago. So, for anyone who has yet ventured... Read More
