Valentine’s Day Card for Sundown

February 14th, 2024

To Debi, my wife of 38 years, all in Boulder, Happy Valentines Day! And to ALL of you, a Happiest of Valentine’s Day. May your lover never hurt you, and may you never hurt them. Valentine’s Day serves as a reminder that we are in love with each other for the day, and for the rest of the year. I have always made my own Valentine’s Day cards. While some are rather crude, I have gotten better at drawing an arrow through a heart. This year I did something completely different For Debi, turtles Phlash and Speedy, and green cheeked conure parrot, Layla. Because we live the future,... Read More

The Boulder Bird on the Flying Trapeze

January 5th, 2024

Layla Posing for a Portrait. Layla would speak to us, but if she does I’d have to pay her the higher “I’ve got lines” rate for actors! Ignore the picture. Ignore my clever text. WATCH THE VIDEO! My best efforts are fine, but Layla is funnier. I’d say she’s a ham, but then we’d look alike. I don’t want to compete with her for being cute because I would SO lose! Movie of Layla on her trapeze: layla trapeze IMG_1905 Boulder... Read More

Know Thyself When Seeking A Mate

December 4th, 2023

I recently went on a date with a nice guy with whom I had quite a few shared interests.  During the course of the conversation, he mentioned that he didn’t have health care. I was a little surprised because in your 50s you start to have need for health care more than you did in your 30s and even 40s. When we parted company I noticed that he drove a very nice car and it made me think, why is health care such a low priority for him?  I never really thought that through however, because I started thinking downstream about a relationship with someone with no health care.  I considered what would... Read More

Why the Unpredictable Nature of Hiking Makes Life Worth Living

June 22nd, 2023

Throughout my life, hiking has always been something that both excites and terrifies me. Before I even had ability to walk, my parents would carry me in their backpacks along their hikes. As a very young child, I looked at the environment in wonder. I didn’t have the slightest idea what I was looking at, but the incredible color palette of the Boulder County trails kept me coming back for more. It kept me curious, and gave me an unshakeable feeling of wanderlust many years before I even knew what the word meant. As I grew, I gradually felt more comfortable in nature. My childhood curiosity... Read More
