NFL Mock Draft – Who Does Denver Select?

April 14th, 2021

The NFL Draft is less than two weeks away and Denver has the ninth overall pick.  The off-season has been filled with the re-signing of big-name players and shoring up weaknesses with free agent acquisitions.  The Broncos could use their pick on a top linebacker, a shutdown cornerback, or depth at the offensive lineman position. And there is always that question at quarterback. A look at the 2021 NFL Draft, the predictions, and who Denver eventually decides on.   Jacksonville Jaguars – The first pick of the 2021 NFL Draft is a no-brainer. Gardner Minshew is a nice backup in the NFL, but... Read More

Denver’s QB Dilemma and Ten Solutions

January 12th, 2021

It started innocently enough.  Peyton Manning had just walked away from the game and Denver was contemplating who should be the heir apparent.  Trevor Siemian or Paxton Lynch? I suggested a trade for, then 35-year-old, Phillip Rivers. Before the free-agent signing of Case Keenum and the subsequential drafting of Bradley Chubb, I suggested that Denver should take quarterback Josh Allen, or possibly trade down and select Lamar Jackson. And now Drew Lock sits at the top of the depth chart with career stats of 23 TDs and 18 INTs, and a lifetime record of 8-10.  If this year’s playoffs have taught... Read More

The Denver Broncos (Re)Building Inspector

December 9th, 2020

On February 7, 2016, confetti poured from above the bleachers as the Denver Broncos celebrated their last Super Bowl victory.  Peyton Manning walked away from the game a living legend, and John Elway cemented his legacy as both a championship quarterback, as well as a general manager. The following summer, long after the confetti was swept away, Denver gave John Elway a 5-year/$30 million extension while proclaiming, In John we trust.  And why not?  Elway was the architect that replaced Tim Tebow with Peyton Manning, dismissed coach John Fox after a 12-4 Super Bowl appearance season, designed... Read More

Blow it for Burrow—Tank for Tua—Hurl for Herbert

November 15th, 2019

In a battle against the Cleveland Browns two weeks ago, the Denver Broncos (3-6) won the game but lost ground in the race to secure a top pick in next year’s NFL Draft.  But with a rookie quarterback and facing a difficult remaining schedule, look for Denver to battle it out with the Miami Dolphins, Cincinnati Bengals, and others at the bottom of the league for the potential top prize. Whether Denver goes winless the rest of the season and manages to secure the top pick or wins a game or two and finishes with a top-ten selection, here is how Denver’s draft will go, no matter where they land. First... Read More

QB Issues—Patience Is a Virtue

February 12th, 2019

The quick fix rarely pays off long-term. John Elway and the Denver Broncos learned that the hard way when they overpaid for Case Keenum, reached on drafting Paxton Lynch, and underestimated the development of Trevor Siemian in the search to find the next franchise quarterback. Whether it was strategy, naivety, or just plain fear, failing to select a quarterback such as Josh Allen, Josh Rosen, or Lamar Jackson in last year’s draft has left Denver with a huge void, and a huge opportunity. Mock drafts have the Broncos selecting Missouri’s Drew Lock in the 2019 NFL draft as the next “quick fix”... Read More

Denver Broncos – What’s the Plan?

January 1st, 2019

The season is finally over.  To recap, the Broncos finished 6-10 with losses to the NY Jets, San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns, and Oakland Raiders, Case Keenum ranked 29th in quarterback rating, the entire coaching staff is job hunting, and John Elway needs a plan.  Here are five of them.   Rebuild in 2020 – The favorable choice, as the Broncos limp through the 2019 season with Case Keenum at quarterback, draft an Offensive Lineman, and wait for QBs like Justin Herbert (Oregon), Tua Tagovailoa (Alabama), Jake Fromme (Georgia), or Trevor Lawrence (Clemson) in the 2020 draft. The plan... Read More
