Photography isn’t just about capturing a moment; it’s about capturing personality and a story. After graduating from University of Denver with a criminology degree, Stephanie Tyson wasn’t a hundred percent sure what she wanted to do. A summer spent photographing the zipline at the Colorado Adventure Center in Idaho Springs, decided her passion for photography can’t be ignored for the “practical” approach of a life in the office. Born and raised in Colorado, she is no stranger to the beauty that this state has, both in landscape and in people. Her heart lies with the ocean, and when she gets the chance, you can find her sitting on the shore line shooting surfers all day. During the summer, there’s a good chance she’s exploring or hanging out on the fence line at a rodeo with her camera. All other times, you can find her in Starbucks, curled up with her cat, or at the archery range.

Humans have always had a complicated relationship with weather. Ancient cultures prayed and made offerings to gods in hopes of receiving conditions conducive to growing crops. Adverse weather, then, was often interpreted as displeasure on behalf of those same beings—a punishment for failing to observe proper rituals. It doesn’t take a history scholar to understand this impulse. Weather, now as then, is both an enemy and ally. On one hand, it provides everything from the raw material for food—sunlight driving photosynthesis, wind the primary method of plants spreading their seeds—to …

Sometimes, writing about art and theater feels a lot like falling down the proverbial rabbit hole as I try to find the angle to write about wandering through a haunted-theater immersive experience, getting splashed in a Halloween horror show in the basement of a spaghetti emporium, sweating through a DIY D&D in a comic shop, savoring (har har!) Sweeney Todd’s enraged high notes, and trying to quiet my howling dog in a public house. I’ve found myself in some odd and awkward scenarios. To update the metaphor, writing this column is a lot like drunk-clicking through an endless algorithm o…

“A musician, a poet, and a young man searching for his life.” To escape the “Meth heads and Mormons” of Missouri, Pier came to Boulder in search of fabled beautiful scenery and a lot of enlightened people. While he found this to be true, he also found that there is a level of pretentiousness that comes with the amount of money some people have here. There’s a huge focus on arts in Boulder that he falls right into. He primarily plays guitar, but is the master of all things strung, like the ukulele and bass. But he’s a “lyricist above all else”. He’s always had an affinity for …

Keith didn’t think he was going to make it to the summit of the flatirons. He’s from Pennsylvania, but made the trip out to Boulder so he could visit a friend. Keith was worried that hiking mountains that are already a mile high would prove to be difficult. He was especially worried about getting altitude sickness and suffering through horrible headaches – which have been a problem for him in the past. After hearing stories from friends and family that have visited, he was expecting to be out of breath and in need of oxygen almost immediately. But, on the contrary, he found it much easie…

David had been writing songs since he was a kid, but of course, as life got busy, that passion got set on a shelf. When he found himself with more time on his hands after losing hours at work, he picked it up again. He learned guitar and loves it all over again. He also started traveling across the country. He’s originally from California, but he’s travelled all across the West Coast and into Mexico. But he came to Boulder because of the scenery and people. He dreams of traveling all over the world, but right now, Colorado is still his favorite spot so far.

Hi there! I’m Maliika! I’m a Denver transplant. My mom brought me from very far away. I’m not sure where here is but I like it so far. Snow is fun. There’s so many trails that are good for a dog like me. It was scary coming here though. I had to spend the night at an airport somewhere. It was very strange and lonely. But Mom made sure that I was ok, and now we’re here and it’s great. My favorite thing is anything that I can go chase. Currently pine cones are extra fun. I’ll chase one for hours if you keep throwing it for me. You are going to throw it for me right?

Kat is not a Boulder native, but she loves the focus on the arts and the eclecticism that Boulder has. She’s been writing for Elephant Journal for sometime, and since they’re headquartered in Boulder she figured that this was the perfect time to come check them out. Elephant Journal is the world’s leading online magazine for mindful living. She’s from South Africa, and speaks a little Afrikaans. What are some swear words? “Ek moet jou vermoor” means I’m going to kill you. “I can’t believe I came all the way to Boulder to teach someone how to say I’m going to kill you in Afr…

Julia has lived in Boulder for the past three years. When she first moved here, she rented a two bedroom, two bath apartment with all utilities and pet rent included for $750 a month. Now, she lives in a one bedroom apartment with her roommate for $650 a month, no utilities included. She sleeps on the couch. “I think the weed is to blame.” Well everyone thinks that. “No, no. Not just people that want to smoke. People come out here and learn how to grow, learn the rules and regulations, then they launch grow sites in other states.” Julia is also a journalism major and wants to get an MF…

Accountant by day; saving people from the rat race by night. Well, not really—it’s usually weekends. Karen isn’t what people would consider a super hero. After all, she’s "just an accountant", but she found her own inner peace and is determined to help others find theirs. “I started watching Sadhguru on Youtube before going to this retreat with Inner Engineering ” The program centers around meditation and traditional Indian yoga. “It changed my life. I started slowing down to enjoy life. I’m happier overall.”  She hopes that Inner Engineering can change other people’s live…
