Boulder in Bloom: These Crabapple Blossoms Are Stealing the Show This Spring

Crab Apple

Tiny Buds, Big Beauty — Crab Apple Blossoms on the Verge of Spring Photo: Lenny “Lensworth” Frieling

Spring in Boulder just keeps delivering, and this latest burst of blossoms might be one of the best yet.

These photos capture something truly special. The detail, the color, the texture—it’s all there. From the soft fuzz on the stems to the tight clusters of pink-to-white buds, this is Boulder spring at its absolute peak.

What you’re looking at here is a classic member of the Malus genus—most likely a crabapple tree, one of the most beloved ornamental trees found throughout Boulder neighborhoods, parks, and walking paths.

Why These Blossoms Stand Out

The tightly packed clusters of blooms are a signature look of crabapple and apple trees alike. Those pink buds slowly opening into white flowers create that perfect spring contrast that makes these trees pop against Boulder’s bluebird skies.

Take a closer look and you’ll notice the fine fuzz along the leaves and stems—a subtle but defining characteristic of Malus trees. Even the way the flowers emerge from short, knobby growth spurs is a telltale sign you’re looking at a fruit-bearing species.

In a place like Boulder, where nature and community blend seamlessly, these small details matter. They’re part of what makes a simple walk feel like an experience.

Crabapple or Apple Tree?

Without seeing the fruit, it’s tough to say with absolute certainty—but here’s the breakdown:

Crabapple trees typically produce small, marble-sized fruit and are widely planted across Boulder for their beauty and seasonal color.

Domestic apple trees grow larger, edible fruit and are more commonly found in orchards or more intentional garden settings.

The blossoms themselves are nearly identical, which is why this comes down to an educated guess.

Given Boulder’s landscaping style—especially in neighborhoods like North Boulder and along local trails—there’s a strong chance this is a crabapple tree putting on a spring show.

A Classic Boulder Spring Moment

Scenes like this are exactly why spring is such a special time in Boulder. You don’t need a big hike or a major destination. Sometimes it’s just a tree in full bloom, glowing in the sunlight, reminding you to slow down and take it in.

Keep an eye on these blossoms over the next few weeks. If fruit starts to form, that’s when the final answer reveals itself.

Until then, enjoy the view—because moments like this don’t last long.
