Boulder Outdoor Picture of the Day: Rare Spring Snowstorm Blankets Boulder County

Spring May snow storm, Lafayette

Spring in Boulder can change in a heartbeat, and this week was the perfect reminder. Just when many residents were planting flowers, opening patio furniture, and preparing for warmer weather, a powerful late-season snowstorm rolled into Boulder County and transformed backyards into scenes that looked more like January than May.

Today’s Outdoor Picture of the Day captures that classic Colorado contrast perfectly — fresh snow covering green spring landscapes in Boulder County during one of the most unusual weather swings of the season. The heavy, wet snow coated trees, lawns, and rooftops while temperatures dropped low enough to trigger freeze concerns across the Front Range.

The storm was part of a significant late spring weather system that impacted much of Colorado. Forecasters reported several inches of snow across Boulder and nearby communities, while foothill areas and mountain towns saw dramatically higher totals. Jamestown near Boulder recorded over 16 inches of snow, and Estes Park saw around 17 inches from the storm. The National Weather Service described it as one of the strongest May snowstorms in years for parts of the region.

Even lower elevations around Boulder saw accumulating snow and slushy conditions, creating slick roads, power outages, and a dramatic return to winter scenery after recent warm spring days. The combination of heavy snow and freezing overnight temperatures also raised concerns for gardens, trees, and early spring plants across Boulder County.

What makes storms like this so fascinating is how uniquely Colorado they feel. One week people are hiking in sunshine wearing shorts, and the next week Boulder is buried under wet snow with snow shovels back out in full force. It is one of the reasons Boulder’s outdoor scenery is never boring. The dramatic weather changes create some of the most memorable and beautiful photographs of the year.

This photo also highlights something longtime locals know well — Boulder County’s spring storms often produce some of the prettiest snow scenes because the snow falls on blooming trees, green grass, and colorful landscapes instead of dormant winter scenery. The contrast creates a magical look that photographers wait all year to capture.

While the snow will likely melt quickly thanks to Colorado’s strong May sunshine, this storm will definitely be remembered as one of Boulder County’s most impressive late-season snowfalls in recent years.
