Boulder’s Dog of the Day: Addison’s Favorite Log and the Wide-Open West

Today’s Boulder’s Dog of the Day is Addison, a joyful pup captured mid-run across one of Boulder County’s vast open space fields, carrying her favorite log like it’s the trophy of the day. With the Rocky Mountains towering behind her and the sun lighting up the landscape, this moment is the definition of canine happiness.

Boulder is truly a dog’s paradise. With over 45,000 acres of protected open space and more than 150 miles of trails, there’s no shortage of places for dogs like Addison to run, roam, and explore. Many of these areas allow off-leash access under voice and sight control, making Boulder one of the most dog-friendly communities in the country.

On this particular day, Addison is doing what she loves most—running full speed across an open field, log in mouth, tail wagging, ears flopping in the wind. For Addison, and many dogs like her, there’s something incredibly satisfying about finding the perfect stick or log. But why do dogs love wood so much?

Dogs are natural chewers and carriers, and sticks mimic the texture and shape of bones, which can activate their natural instincts. The earthy scent of bark and the satisfying crunch can be irresistible to dogs. Carrying a stick or log can also give them a sense of purpose—it becomes their mission during the adventure, their prize to parade proudly.

Addison’s loyalty to this particular log is legendary—she finds it every time she comes to this park. It’s more than just a toy; it’s her ritual, her joy, and perhaps her statement: “This is my field, and this is my log!”

As you walk through Boulder’s many dog-friendly spaces—from Valmont Dog Park to the East Boulder Trailhead, and from Chautauqua to the wide grasslands north of town—you’ll find dogs of all shapes and sizes living their best lives. Whether chasing a ball, swimming in the creek, or proudly hauling a log twice their size, they are part of what makes Boulder so special.

So today, we celebrate Addison—running free, owning the moment, and reminding us all to enjoy the little things… like the perfect log.
