Boulder‘s warm weather Wood ducks inhabit wooded swamps, marshes, streams, and lakes across North America, particularly favoring areas that provide dense canopy cover. This preference for wooded environments is unique among ducks and is reflected in their name. They are cavity nesters, relying on tree holes to lay their eggs, which distinguishes them from most other waterfowl that nest on the ground. Conservation efforts, including the provision of nesting boxes, have been crucial in recovering populations from historical declines due to habitat loss and overhunting.

Not only are wood ducks a success story in conservation, but they also play a significant role in their ecosystems. As omnivores, their diet includes seeds, fruits, insects, and aquatic invertebrates, making them important for the control of insect populations and the dispersal of seeds, which helps in the regeneration of aquatic plants.

Wood ducks are also known for their remarkable breeding behaviors. They are one of the few duck species that can have two broods in a single season. Shortly after hatching, ducklings must make a perilous leap from their high nesting cavities to the ground to follow their mother to water, a testament to their resilience and adaptability.
